2025.01.30 23:09 E-sbn Advice for issue with time expectations at work
Hi,
I (22f) just got my first job post-masters. I am working at a contract firm for a state level gov’t org. In the NorthEast. Generally I like my job but I do have one issue which is getting to work on time.
Some important facts: For the first month i had issues getting in on time and so I ended up moving my start time 15 minutes later. Even if I am a minute late I’m expected to lose 15 minutes of PTO so I’m not trying to be late at all. I take the bus to work and my city has an okay transit system but it’s not amazing. I was recently transferred teams as well at 3 months in. I also have ADHD.
On this new team I was given 5 or 6 times the amount of work. I’m actually not mad at this because I had basically nothing to do on my in-office days (hybrid remote schedule). That being said I know very little about this team that basically has only had one consistent person (around 60f) for years.
After I changed my schedule, I constantly made it in on time for about a month. My new supervisor has only been watching me for that long so there hadn’t been any issues.
The other day I had a meeting that went after my outtime. Despite my state org being strict on “no Flex Time” and forcing me to take out PTO if I was late, when I asked my supervisor what to do in the situation she said “it sucks but you’re expected to stay late and not get paid.”
Now this is where things get messy. I can’t do overtime without approval. While if I miss 5 minutes I am docked 15 min of PTO staying even a minute later does not add any time unless approved. I understand this and as annoying as it is it’s fine, whatever. As I said I have ADHD. Do to a mix of meds and hyper focus, I didn’t realize that I stayed 40 minutes late to finish a doc. I clocked out via email (non-officially way for bosses to check official time sheets as correct) as soon as I realized, and didn’t request overtime on my official time sheet, nor did I plan to.
Additionally I had two late incidents this week for the first time in a month. The first one was admittedly my fault. I forgot my state work computer at home and had to go back for it leading to me being about 30 minutes late. Today, I was completely on time for the bus, but it was 20 minutes late (both buses that I could have taken came at the same time when they are supposed to be 10 minutes apart). I meant to send an email but for some reason it never sent.
Today, my boss emailed me about not informing her of my time change, working late when I didn’t request overtime. She mentioned that “we had talked about this before.” This was the early mentioned “stay late no pay” conversation about meetings where she mentioned she tends to work up to half a day more a week without extra pay (she is salaried though not hourly).
There are a few options I could take from this point. Mind you I want to eventually apply for a job with the org (likely on the same team) once I get my mandatory required year of work in.
- Shut up and deal with it.
- I could go full online, as a contract employee I am allowed to do so. That being said my boss’s boss (we are a team of twenty people so we all known eachother and talk often) really likes that I come into work. I want to keep doing so, but I feel like I’m being punished for trying to do so.
- I already sent an email in response saying I will be more careful about my time and will only request overtime when required and I have been given pre-notice (I.e. heavily hinting at meetings). Since I am not given any breathing rooming in regardless to flexibility I don’t think it should be expected of me either. At this point if and when I am required for a meeting after my COB (4:15pm) I will request overtime. I have already started recording all conversations concerning these issues and my supervisor (as a way to support my work) has already agreed to write summaries of our meetings, so I will have record if they try to push the issue.
What would you all suggest?

 | Made this for my GF’s cousin as a bday gift. I love simple PLA prints because they are easy to sand and clean, but I struggle with clean blocks of color so it was a great opportunity to practice. Printed with a K1C and Hyper PLA, .4 shnozzle and .08 layer height. Lots of sanding from 100 up to wet 2000 (at least where I could access), then colored with lots of rattle cans, liquid mask, and dry brush, then finished with satin varnish. Sorry for the long post this is soemthing I've been tracking for when I meet with my doctor in two week Friday January 10th Started feeling sick Pooped 2-3 times , solid then one diarrhea ish Colon spasming Saturday January 11th nasuea couldn't eat even a banana Sunday January 12th was able to eat half a banana Monday 13th ate super small bites Colon felt tight/full Th/fr 14-15 - colon feeling better , sometimes no colon pain
January 15-25 relatively fine Mood much better , way less anxiety and hardly any colon pain Had my period during this time
Sunday January 26- started feeling unwell, pooped 1-2 Monday January 27- woke up nauseous and can't really eat - pooped twice Colon only slightly hurting very mildly
Tuesday January 29-dry mouth, halitosis, thirsty (blood sugar normal) muscles feeling in throat Face and body completely flushed in evening, cold hands and toes Felt super trembly/chills no fever
Went to Elite er cause I felt so bad Swabbed for respiratory panel - negative Didn't look at my throat or do a basic exam No blood/urine tests No fluids Brushed it off a respiratory virus Offered me antibiotics and steroids - I declined
Wednesday January 29-heart palpitations upon waking , naseous, diarrhea twice just watery cause haven't eaten Colon pain a little Facial/chest flushing again middle of day
Today January 30- woke up pounding heart And naseous colon pain a little Stomach burning slightly Colon feels tight
Finally forced myself to eat 3/4 plain piece of toast and 3/4 chicken sausage link with a 1/2 green tea and water Was burping alot after
Having some lower back pain near hips
Bp has been 140s/high 80s-90s For several days (3 days) Tossing and waking up at night Also first couple days last flare peeing a lot !
