Lord Harlon Tarly stood in the gardens of Hornhill, bow in hand as he peered down range at a target. These past few months had been filled with folly and stupidity, least of all from his son Randyll, whom had decided to march to war behind his back.
Foolish He thought as he aimed at the target. He had just been informed that his son was returning home, he told a servant that he wanted Randyll in the gardens to speak with him and so now he waited.
He fired. It struck the other ring of the target, he had gotten rusty over time. A servant walked into the clearing of the garden. “Ser Randyll, m’lord.” They stated before retreating back and allowing his son to enter.
“Father.” Randyll coldly greeted. Harlon didn’t even bother to turn and meet his eye as he notched another arrow.
“Who do you think you are, boy?” He questioned. Randyll shifted awkwardly in place. Harlon fired the arrow.
“You are referring to my-“
“To your departure, yes!” Harlon turned in anger to face his son. “Against my leave, you gallivant out to war and are then too cowardly to even follow through with it!”
“I marched on a matter of honor and decency!” Randyll retorted in annoyance. “Something had to be done!”
“And what have you done? Marched for a little while and then came cowering home.” Harlon stated in derision.
“Rhaegar is dead, our quarrel ended with him. I advised a Great Council, but the other Lords refused to listen and marched onwards. I returned home.”
Harlon let out a sigh, that seemed to sound like a bitter laugh. “Well, it would seem they listened after all. There is to be a great council.”
“What?!”
“Yes. And you are to stay here. That is an order. I will be attending the council in House Tarly’s name and no one else.” Harlon turned once more and notched another arrow.
“But father-“
“Enough. Dismissed. Stay here and I shall forgive your little… misadventure.” Harlon stated with finality.
He fired again. Bullseye.
He then handed the bow to his son and left the gardens, to gather a small retinue and leave for the capital.

After finishing Dark, I’m left with a buzzing question that I can’t quite resolve. The show is brilliant, but I feel like it contradicts its own rules, and I need help understanding this.
Here’s my issue: If the loop is deterministic and cannot be changed—meaning everything that happens is fixed and repeats endlessly—how can Claudia succeed in telling Jonas and Martha about the origin world (the third world) in the final loop?
In previous loops, Claudia always fails to discover the origin world or share this knowledge. If the loop is truly deterministic, shouldn’t she always fail? How can one iteration of the loop be different from the others? This feels like a contradiction because the show repeatedly emphasizes that nothing within the loop can be changed.
To me, this seems like a loophole in the show’s logic. If the loop is deterministic, Claudia should either always succeed or always fail. The idea that she succeeds only once feels like a narrative convenience rather than something that aligns with the show’s own rules.
What do you all think? Am I missing something, or is this a genuine inconsistency in Dark? I’d love to hear your thoughts and interpretations!
