Hello everybody,
Please advise if I’m making the right call or not.
Kage, my 11.5 year old akita inu got diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma last week.
It started with him starting to be picky with his food about 1.5 months ago - first he refused treats and dental sticks, then stopped eating his usual meals. Then, he started having other symptoms, like losing weight and getting exhausted even in short walks (he had to lie down for minutes before he could continue for another 50m).
I took him to the vet and did several examinations with specialists. First, we did a blood test, and it turns out his liver is showing irregular numbers (everything was a bit higher than normal). So, I took him to an ultrasound, which didn’t show anything on his liver, but it showed that the wall of his stomach is about 4x thicker than normal. Immediately after we went to do an emergency gastric endoscopy. There was an inflammated, ulcer-kind of thing on his stomach in the thickened part, they took samples to run tests. When the results came back, it showed that he has a highly malignant gastric adenocarcinoma.
Since then he’s been on meds (antibiotics and probiotics, combined with Proton Pump Inhibitor-type GERD medicine).
Now he barely eats. He eats very small portions during the day, but doesn’t really want to have dinner, his regular meal. He’s slowly refusing each new type of food we try to feed him (chicken, rice, broth). A few days ago he enthusiastically ate some cat food (we also have a cat), but the day after he ate a lot less of that either. He also vomits once or twice a day. He has a large fur so it’s not THAT visible, but when you pet him, you can feel his bones sticking out more and more.
As of his mental health, he is slower and visibly more tired in general, but he can still stand up, move around, comes to greet me when I come home, but I cannot take him on walks longer than 10-15 minutes, because by the end he’s just exhausted.
I’m thinking it is time to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge, because due to the cancer his appetite is not going to get better, and even though he’s still “fine”, he’s slowly withering away.
The vet is coming tomorrow to do the deed, but I’m actually unsure if it’s not too early. Please help, should I keep him alive a few days (or maybe even 1-2 weeks) longer and let him enjoy life a bit more while he still has the energy for it, or should I put him to rest while he still has some dignity?
He’s been the most amazing dog that I could have asked for and I really want to do what is the best for him.

PS: Operation and other invasive treatments are out of the question.

TL;DR: 11.5 year old dog has gastric adenocarcinoma. He barely eats anything these days, and even though he can still move around, I’m not sure if it isn’t the time to put him to sleep.
