I thought about making Mephiles be evil from the start and not be evil because of the Solaris Project. I know about a game guide saying that about Solaris, but who reads them these days? I thought about making Solaris a divine being that originally just wanted to give light to people who went mad from their own power, and when viewing world history, grew to hate the people that lived on Earth, and eventually everyone in the universe. Solaris was already being worshiped by the people of Soleanna, and Solaris just let them be until they felt like destroying everything, until they were experimented on by the Duke. Solaris let it happen, wanting to see what would happen, and felt no pain. When they decided they were done, they accidentally split into Mephiles and Iblis. Mephiles had all the memories of Solaris, and basically was Solaris when it came to the consciousness department. Mephiles tried to escape with Iblis so they could recuperate until Shadow locked up Mephiles in the Scepter of Darkness. Mephiles didn't view his ten years as there as being that long, since he's a mostly timeless being, and felt that it was pretty comfortable. When Solaris was erased from the timeline, the creator God of the universe, created a new divine light-giving entity called Sol and made sure that the history of Soleanna went exactly as it had originally. Mephiles eventually returns after Sonic x Shadow Generations in a new game, I'm thinking a Silver the Hedgehog game, where he's more composed than he was last time, because he came to the revelation that he can never not exist for a long period of time, that no matter how many times he's erased from existence, he'll eventually come back. I was thinking about also getting meta with it, like having a reason that Mephiles always comes back is because of the fans liking him so much, and the stuff in that game guide being his manipulation. I've rambled enough.

2024.11.25 14:34 funkyg73 [ZX Spectrum 48K] [80's] Toccata and Fugue in D minor
I heard Toccata and Fugue in D minor at the weekend and there is a bit in that that was the intro screen to game I played in the 80's on my ZX Spectrum. I've searched online and there are lots of games that use it but none for the Spectrum. Here is a Youtube link to the full tune, the bit from the game starts at 2:41 Toccata
It kind of reminds me of the intro to Jet Set Willy, but that is a jazzed up version of Moonlight Sonata rather than this.
I've no idea what the game was or even what kind of game I just have the tune stuck in my head from it, please help me get this splinter out of my brain!

I'd love to know your thoughts. If we operate under the understanding that there is an 8th survivor, what are they even doing? Where have they been and why have they not been shown yet?
Initially I thought that the others had fallen out with whoever the 8th survivor is but this doesn't hold up. They all seem to live very separate lives and IF the others did fall out with the 8th survivor whatever they did must've been pretty bad as there was little push back when it came to Misty being around.
The only answer I can think of is that the 8th survivor is in prison/institutionalised or just lives a solitary off-the-grid life so they're hard to contact. That doesn't fix why the line 'we're all here' (or whatever it was, I can't remember verbatim) was said in the adult-timeline hunt so who knows?!
What's your theory and why are they just now coming into the story IF there is another survivor?

The songs starts off very quiet and gentle, even for B&S. But it builds, oh how it builds, and that's one thing I love about it.
Of course, the lyrics of this super-gentle beginning to the song are just gold. I particularly enjoy:
She didn't have a single penny
She stuck her finger in the air
She tried to flag down an aeroplane
I suppose she needs a holiday
I put my arm around her waist
She put me on the ground with Judo
She didn't recognize my face
She wasn't even looking
The way Stuart says "she put me on the ground with judo" is just low-key hilarious. He's so nonchalant about it!
The story continues. I've never actually followed what exactly happens in this, what I'm calling part 1, I just find very atmospheric and evocative.
Also note that the instrumentation gradually builds up in part I.
Then the beautiful solo...
trumpet? organ? I like how the song is picking up in intensity now. The melody of the solo is just beautiful, and the pace of the musical interlude - the melody carries it through, and it's sort of a stately pace - not rushing, but always moving forward and continuing to build...
Then we come into part II (sorry I'm not good with musical terms), and now the song becomes more "meta" with Stuart singing about himself. This verse is just muah, chef's kiss:
I'm not as sad as Dostoevsky
I'm not as clever as Mark Twain
I'll only buy a book for the way it looks
And then I stick it on the shelf again
and this, also:
It's beyond me what a girl can see
I'm only lucid when I'm writing songs
Now, in my opinion, we come to the song's climax. The lyrics that always stick in my head and make me smile:
This is just a modern rock song
This is just a sorry lament
We're four boys in our corduroys
We're not terrific but we're competent
Stevie's full of good intentions
Richard's into rock 'n' roll
Stuart's staying in, and he thinks it's a sin
That he has to leave the house at all
"this is just a modern rock song, this is just a sorry lament." - love this line so much
"We're four boys in our corduroys, we're not terrific, but we're competent." - this line, rhyming with the above, is just PERFECTION! lol
One more instrumental interlude, with all the sounds swirling around, and again, it takes its time, lets the melody run, until we come to a rather abrupt ending:
This is just a modern rock song
This is just a tender affair
I count "three, four" and then we start to slow
Because a song has got to stop somewhere
One thing that's crazy to me is that it's a 7-minute song, but it really doesn't feel like it. I like long songs, but often, they feel long. I don't know, for example, Hurricane by Bob Dylan, comes in at 8 and a half minutes, and it feels long, like, there's a lot of story, a lot of lyrics. With this song, there aren't all that many lyrics, and the song just flows by as easily as a standard 3-minute pop song.
Note: For the longest time I misheard one lyric. I always thought Stuart was saying "I'm not as smart as Dostoevsky..."
In conclusion, I think that makes this song especially special is how it builds, crests, and then recedes, and the lyrics, which are tasty because they are meta, tongue in cheek, and sort of break the 4th wall, referring to the song itself....
Anyone else a big fan of this song???

My millennial ass grew up in a time when we were told to never ask about salary in a job interview because it makes it look as if money is they only thing you care about (even if that is true)
But I feel like the tides are changing?
In the phone screening phase, is it okay to ask the recruiter the range of what they have budgeted for this role?
I’d rather get them to do the talking instead of asking me what I’m looking for, because with the roles that I am interviewing for, the ranges can vary wildly from role to role and company to company

Hola a todos! I'm getting back into reading in Spanish and want to start reading less translated work and more original Spanish work. There are a lot of great threads here with tons of book recommendations, but I find a lot of them seem to be more "classic" or heavier reads with complicated plots (Garcia Marquez, Allende). I'm looking for lighter reads - more along the lines of beach read, thriller, modern romance, and even young adult. Basically, books that you probably wouldn't read in a Spanish lit class and would be more likely to buy at an airport, lol. Bonus if they're set in Mexico or by a Mexican author, bc that's the dialect of Spanish that I'm learning/using. Thanks in advance for your recs!
