2024.11.25 16:27 Standard-Metal-3836 Would a Cloudlifter help with noise floor?
I'm using an H5 and two Shure SM58s to record conversations. The issue I'm facing is that with the 58 being a quiet dynamic mic and the H5's preamps not being all that great, I have a higher noise floor than I would like. (It is just self-noise from the gear, I assume, a low, constant buzzing sound.) I have to either crank up the gain or speak from a really short distance, which introduces its own problems, such as more plosives and making the recording sound like an ASMR.
My question is whether a Cloudlifter would, proportionately, give me a bigger boost in sound than noise and thus help increase the difference of volume between the "voice" and "silence" parts in the recording. It seems like the easiest solution (if it works). Right now with the peaks normalized at -6db, the static is at -54-50.
Other options, of course, would be a better recorder, better mics, or switching to condensers (which I'd rather avoid since I don't record in treated spaces), but how do I know when is enough?
Any advice?

Just looking for input or opinions I guess. Ongoing court case, I've had sweat patches on/changed every two weeks since August. They've all tested clean until today, I got a call from my attorney and he told me that one came back dirty (methamphetamines). I haven't used any drugs, haven't been around any. It's been a bullshit case from the start, I lost custody of my kids temporarily, now it looks like permanently, figuring out why it tested positive probably won't help much anyway, but for my own sanity, just wondering if anybody else has had any experience with sweat patches or has an idea why it would test positive.

CPU: 9900k
16GB Ram
GPU: 3080
I just bought a samsung odyssey g6 g60sd oled 360Hz monitor.
Im mainly playing Valorant. My fps goes from 200-450 depending on whats happening ingame.
Ideally I would be able to lock my fps to the monitors refresh rate but my old trusty PC can't keep up. So what are my best options? I want to aim for:
- Smooth gameplay
- Next to none input lag
- No screen tearing

While I won't go into the "why did they turn and go up into the mountains" I think I might have a clue as to what happened after they stopped. These guys loaded up on sugar and chocolate milk not far from where the basketball game was being held, when they stopped at Behr's Market. It is safe to say that after two hours, someone had to go to the bathroom.
After watching Files of the Unexplained about the case, I noticed that someone said there were large snow drifts. Like 5 and 10 foot drifts. you can see that where the car stopped was right next to a drop-off.
According to the wiki, a park ranger saw their car parked where it was found less than 24 hours after the disappearance, although he didn't report it for a few days. What that means is there must have been a sudden event that took all of them away from the car, after they all voluntarily got out of the car. I am basing that off of it was a two-door car, so people in the front had to let people out of the back. Since Doc was found with the keys in his pocket, means that he shut off the car, pulled the keys and got out. Since the car started right up, there is really no other reason than a sudden event after they got out of the car in which they could not go back. Since there was no damage to the car, like a broken window, or a bent door, then no one was breaking in.
So if they stopped and got out of the car, went close to the drop off right next to their car to pee. A snow drift gives way and they fall 30 to 100 ft. Not only that, they can not climb back up. This might explain how they got lost, and how they couldn't get directly back to the car.
From there, I would guess that they went south first and to the east. After getting disorientated, they turned back north and continued in that direction. Not being able to get back to the road, and forced to follow the terrain. Which may be why searchers missed them.
Bill and Doc died together, and judging by how much was not eaten. it might be fair to say that they never made it to the cabin.
Ted, Jackie, and Gary may have made it to the cabin, but the question is, after how long. 36 cans of whatever was eaten right? For 3 people, that is 12 meals. Seeing as how Ted was down 80lbs when he was found, he might not have made it to the cabin until 8 weeks, or even the 12 or 13 weeks. If you don't eat for that long, eating a lot can make you sick. If you eat the same thing a few times and it keeps making you sick, and you don't know that you just need to eat a little at a time, you are going to just blame the food and stop eating it. This could explain why the food was still there, and Ted died anyway.
Anyway, just some thoughts.
