2024.11.25 18:53 Substantial_Alarm_65 ARX Style Echo Mode Workout and Progression
In an earlier post, MrMcbonkerson linked to a study/ARX%20Fit%20Article_Single-Pages.pdf) that shows how ARX’s isometric training led to greater gains over 12 weeks compared to traditional weightlifting. The study involved just 1 set of 6 reps of a 14-second exercise (7 seconds concentric, 7 seconds eccentric), for a total of 84 seconds of time under tension (TUT) per body part, twice per week. With progression.
Cool. My goal is to put together a similar program using Echo Mode. Now, Echo Mode is velocity-based, as opposed to total time, but we can estimate the equivalent TUT. Here are my approximations for the different Echo levels:
• Hard: 1 second (both concentric and eccentric)
• Harder: 2 seconds
• Hardest: 4 seconds
• Epic: 8 second
If you have corrections for these estimates, I'm open to hearing them (since the plan is based on them!)
Workout Plan
This is part of a 12-week program with built-in progression.
• Frequency: Perform 2x per week, with as much recovery time as possible between workout days. So like Sunday and Thursday, etc.
• Tempo: Aim for a slow eccentric—around 4 seconds down. The concentric will of course be controlled by the machine.
• Format: Perform all exercises as a superset (one after the other).
Weeks 1-4 For each exercise:
• Echo Mode: Epic Level
• Reps: 10
• Eccentric Load: 130%
Rest periods:
• Weeks 1–2: Rest 20 seconds between exercises.
• Weeks 3–4: Rest 3 seconds between exercises. (This may be tricky if you need to switch handles, but do your best to minimize rest.)
Weeks 5-12 For each exercise:
• Echo Mode: Epic Level
• Reps: 7
• Eccentric Load: 130%
After completing one superset, do another superset with:
• Echo Mode: Epic Level
• Reps: 7 or AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible)
• Eccentric Load: 130%
Rest as little as possible between exercises.
Sample Exercises:
Focus on compound lifts as your main exercises:
• Bench Press or Incline Bench Press (using handles)
• Suitcase Squat or Goblet Squat (using handles)
• Bent-Over Row or Seated Row (using handles or the short bar)
After completing the main exercises, you can add accessory work to prioritize specific areas. Core exercises are a good idea, and that's what ARX mixes in too:
• Good mornings or Romanian Deadlifts
• Crunches (I love the V-tucks)
• Side bends or a rotational movement
Duration
Each session should take no more than 20 minutes, even with added accessory exercises. It’s a very efficient use of time.
Theory
Isokinetic machines like the Vitruvian allow for training approaches that aren’t possible with traditional weights. For example, with traditional weights, doing 10 reps means selecting a lighter load. Over the course of the set, fatigue accumulates, and TUT increases, but you’re limited by the lighter starting weight.
With Echo Mode, the first few reps of a 10-rep set can be done at or near your 1-rep max. As fatigue sets in, the machine adjusts to allow you to complete the set.
This approach should provide a hybrid benefit:
- Maximal Strength Gains (from heavy initial reps)
- Hypertrophy (from accumulated time under tension)
- Strength Endurance Gain (great for sports like grappling)

(California) My partner and I have legal guardianship of D, who just turned 12. She has been with us for exactly 8 years. D is my partner's bio granddaughter, but we are both listed on the paperwork as guardians.
Five months after D came to us, her father passed. This past March, D's mom passed. I spoke with a Family Law attorney shortly after mom's passing because I knew the peripheral family vultures would be circling. I was told guardianship stays in place regardless of D's parents' deaths and moving forward with adoption would open up a can of worms because, she said, "You'd have to notify every family member and that would give them opportunity contest it. Leave the guardianship where it is."
I'm coming here to see if you agree. I love D and I have raised her like she is my own child. The family vultures are the typical kind: nothing we do is right, our neighborhood isn't good enough, D deserves nicer schools, why can't we give her trips to Disneyland twice a year, etc. All this despite the fact D is at the top of her class, she's smart, loved, housed, fed, and is an all around good kid.
Just because there are no parents in the way doesn't mean guardianship can't be contested. Anyone can contest it if they want. The attorney I spoke with said this can be done, but no judge is going to remove a child from a thriving situation just to give D to people who already a part of her life.
Thoughts?

Hello guys.
Recently I discovered the JSPS program and I am thinking to apply in the next round. I will still defend my PhD (June next year), having some papers under appreciation in international journals (one is a Q2, another is a Q1 journal) in the meantime.
The problem is that I don't know if I will have a good answer from these journals until march. I have one local paper published and two translations into Portuguese, but I know it is not so valuable for the international community (my field of research is in the most hardcore of the humanities).
I have a supervisor that agreed to support my candidature in Tokyo, at a mid-tier university. Fortunately for me we research almost the same things and he has an ongoing project related to my thesis.
The problem is that I know that JSPS is pretty competitive. I fear that I will be loosing time applying with just three local publications.
Has someone else obtained the USPS fellowship without a strong publication record? Can I compensate by having a good project? Or anyone has some insights on how can I strengthen my candidature/project?
