Hi everyone,
My girlfriend and I have been together for 1.5 years, and her mom passed about five months ago. I know in terms of grief, she is still in the early stages, and I have done my best to be a supportive partner as she navigates this challenging time. I have never experienced a loss of this magnitude and often struggle to find ways to be helpful.
For background on our relationship, before her losing her mom, I felt like our relationship had really hit its stride and things couldn't have been better, and rightfully due to her loss, it feels like it's been flipped on its head. I am okay with our relationship being less of a priority for her right now as she gets back on her feet but as her partner, there are some concerning behaviours I'm not sure how to approach.
When her mom first passed, she and her family were drinking a lot as they grieved together which I could understand and I would envision myself doing the same. Since then, it has definitely calmed down and there have been times we have drank casually and it's been fine. However, there have been a few instances around 3 where it seems like once she starts drinking she just can't stop and ends up getting blackout drunk. I would like to clarify this was not something that happened prior to her loss so I believe that it's stemming from her grief. In these cases where she's blackout it can get really ugly and have repercussions on everyone who witnesses it.
In other reddit threads that discuss alcohol abuse, people always give the advice to leave the partner as it doesn't get better but I know this is stemming from her grief and her struggles with coping. I am trying to be patient but it does leave me feeling concerned and I want to help her as I don't want her to put herself into these situations anymore, and I can see it having negative impacts on our relationship if it continues but I don't know how to navigate it. I know it's not up to me to fix it but it does feel like a cry for help and I don't want to leave. I love her so much.
My heart breaks for her. What can I do to support her, our relationship and address this before it becomes a bigger issue. Have you been in a similar situation with your grief? How did you overcome it?
