2024.11.26 21:19 Funtious Experiencing Black Screen Of Death w/o backlight
Hi!
I've recently gotten my hands on a couple of Macbook Pros, one from 2020 and one older, that I've yet to identify. Someone senior living near my building sadly died not too long ago, and no family came to claim his belongings, so they were all hauled out to be picked up as trash. I spoke to the garbagemen responsible and I was allowed to look through their former belongings, as I saw they owned a lot of books, many of them right up my alley, along with other interesting items. In my country, garbagemen are not allowed to pick stuff from the trash, and they agreed that anything worthwhile keeping would be a waste to throw out.
Along many other things, I found these two Macbook Pros. They are seemingly in good condition, no scratches, nor any visible damage. I have managed to charge the newer Macbook, but have received no response from the screen.
When I boot it up, I get the usual chime and the keyboard lighting up, but nothing else beyond this. I've researched and attempted several fixes, but they've all come up short:
- Reset NV Ram or PRam (never got a second chime, after holding the buttons for 4-5 minutes)
- Reset SMC (didn't do a difference)
- Booting into Safe Mode (wouldn't even know if it worked, since the screen doesn't show anything)
- External monitor doesn't show anything. It does however adapt to the right resolution, but still all black. When I shut the Macbook off, while connected to external monitor, the external monitor briefly shines bright pink for half a second, so I'm guessing some data is getting through the hdmi cable.
The screen itself is all black, with no visible backlight either.
If anyone has any knowledge on how these issues could possibly be circumvented, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm a student, and I could really use a new computer, since the one I am currently using is greatly damaged and it's battery dead, so it doesn't work without a power cable.
I have some capabilities when it comes to modifying hardware, as I've modded radios, playstations, PSP's and bluetooth speakers in my spare time in the past, but the experts here might be better to judge if I would be capable of DIY'ing this myself. I've heard Apple products can be notoriously tricky to work with. (I haven't owned an Apple product since 2004, so I'm a bit green)
(IMPORTANT NOTE!) I've spoken with the neighbours of the man who passed, and given them my information to pass on to any family who might want to reclaim the items that I've taken an interest in. I have no interest in attempting to hustle/steal from their family, I just think throwing away stuff that still works is too great a waste. The synthesizer, cable and camera I found, among other things, still work great - so I have reason to believe this isn't the end for such an expensive machine!

My birthday is coming up. I don’t necessarily have a good history with my birthday. I never feel like I’m celebrated or things are as nicely planned as I always help everybody else planned for their birthday and fully invested in it so this year my friend offered to play on my birthday. I sent her my card and all of that a couple weeks later she let me know that the main idea she had weren’t going to be feasible because of things being booked. I said OK and then she let me know that most likely she would be planning a dinner or buying something for me, I said OK she showed me where she wanted to have dinner and I looked on the menu and I let her know that the menu didn’t necessarily have things that we would like to eat so I looked up other restaurants and sent it to her a while back.
I also mentioned having a event somewhere, which I inquired about before we agreed she was gonna plan everything.They wrote me back, but I never reached back out to them because she then said that she was going to plan my birthday so the other day she asked me did I decide on what I wanted to do and we found a dress and I said yeah it’s probably gonna be on one of the restaurants that I sent. I also sent it in a group chat and ask everybody to look at the videos of the restaurants and if they had a preference or wherever nobody wrote me back. so today I got a message saying that my dress was out of stock so I sent the screenshot to her and said wow so then she says wow what’s next? I thought she meant like what’s next for an outfit and I said honestly nothing because I don’t feel like I’m gonna be able to find an outfit by my birthday so she asked me about the event I was thinking about mentioned earlier and I said we can book a table online so she said what’s the problem just book online and then I said there’s no problem with actually booking.
that’s where I got lost because it sounded like she had a weird tone with a slight attitude but I don’t understand how she doesn’t understand until now I thought we were going to be going to a dinner and I was waiting on everybody to put in the input for me to actually book so I wrote her back and said oh I thought when you said what next outfit if I can get my hair extensions then yeah we can book so she responds and says are you booking or not? literally you only have a week so you have to decide now because you have to let people know. I just felt like it was unnecessary because I literally just found out that my dress is not coming..and nobody wrote me back including her about the restaurants? She’s been there every step of the way so why the unnecessary attitude? Like you know what’s happening?

Does anybody else’s symptoms flare up with rapid temperature/environmental changes?
I have to constantly go in and out of both a walk in fridge and freezer at work (I only work 4hr shifts as it is) and every time I come back out into the kitchen my heart rate spikes and I struggle to catch my breath for about 10mins. I have to do this about a dozen or so times a shift (I make the premade sandwiches and salads for a gas station, they get stored in there until the display needs changed out)
I stay around 90-100BPM usually, but I will jump up to 120-150 each time I come in and out, it makes me super dizzy and intensifies the brain fog by the end of my

I am in the market for a new Kia Soul. I went to one dealership in my area, and they did not have any on the lot. The salesman tells us they sell so fast they can't even keep them on the lot. He says even trade ins go very quickly. He didn't even try to get our information and offer to reach out when they got one in.
We went to a different dealership and they did have a few. I test drove one, and really liked it. The salesman was very new there, so he gave us his card, and asked for our contact info but never tried to reach out to us asking if we had thought about it, etc.
I find this really strange, it's like none of them are even trying. Are they really selling that quickly or or they not getting any?

I have physical and mental issues. I'm on disability. A newer friends I have is constantly making one of those health issues the brunt of their jokes of me, to me. This person is rude to most people and has a short fuse as well. I'm not special being targeted by them but am around d them the most than anyone probably. It doesn't stop only gets worse and more frequent. Sone comments are truly shocking.
In the past when I called them out on other stuff they gave me the silent treatment and didn't talk or even look or go near me for months. We are in the same building so it's pretty awkward. Our pets also love each other and why we even started talking in the first place.
At what point is taking this toxic verbal bs not worth it to just have peaceful "normal" interactions when we must cross paths? I got good news related to my health today I thought I'd never hear. They knew this and thought it was a great opportunity to say some really upsetting things to me, related to that in a way, passing it all off as "jokes".
I honestly want to be done with them completely but don't know how to go about that without some crazy backlash in some way. It just gets worse and they're mean to many people a lot.
