2024.11.27 04:40 Any_Recognition4238 My Experience with the Mona Lisa 5 Mini Copper IUD in the US
I've carefully recorded my experience to give back to others who find themselves in the situation I was in last year. I wanted to provide LT detail, which I had had a difficult time finding. I am not a medical professional.
BACKGROUND
Before looking getting an IUD, I had been on The Pill (Yaz) for 9 years--since a year after first getting my period--for hormonal acne. As an aside, I found out recently that I have phimosis due to prolonged & early exposure to hormones. I first sought an IUD in early 2022 in order to minimize recurrent spotting & avoid missed doses. After having a bad experience with the Mirena (10/10 insertion pain with dizziness, 8cm folicular ovarian cyst, pain not resolved after 6 mos., issues pooping, etc.), I went back on the pill. When I resumed looking for alternative BC, I learned that The Pill is not vegan (lactose). The side effects, low effectiveness & animal testing associated with other BC's made me seriously consider a copper IUD.
COPPER IUD DECISION
I had never experienced more than mild back pain with periods, so the stories of increased cramps didn't concern me, but I was concerned by the statistic that 30% of people had removed the ParaGard in the first year & that it was a 1970s design that was meant for parous women. I learned that the US was extremely behind globally in IUD-usage due to an old design with organic strings that caused PID back in the 70s. I found some Reddit articles that mentioned that other countries have smaller copper IUD's. With the smaller design came fewer side effects. The smaller design was also better for nonparous women with a smaller uterus (my uterus sounded to 5.5cm at insertion). Another company had a similar design that I could also have chosen, but I chose the Mona Lisa 5 Mini (legal in dozens of countries & currently being tested by the FDA) because I found a Canadian pharmacy that sold it online. The only downside is that it lasts 5 years rather than 12.
PROCUREMENT
I live in MN, so I had thought that I would need to drive up to establish care & receive a prescription in Ontario. I looked for online Canadian care, but since an IUD is considered a medical device & isn't in the same camp as The Pill, I could not find an online clinic that would offer a medical device prescription. After some sleuthing, I found a Canadian pharmacy that would ship me a Mona Lisa 5 Mini IUD without a prescription (I suppose illegally, so I'm not listing their name so that they don't get cited.) Another company had a similar design that I could also have chosen, but I couldn't find it online. The IUD cost somewhere between $100 & $150 USD (I didn't attempt to cover with insurance).
INSERTION
I had confirmed ahead of time that my gyn would insert the device. I went in on day 6-8 of my cycle (go on your period, when the cervix is softer), & I took ibuprofen, as directed. My doc used topical lidocaine. Just so you know, you can also request Misoprostol (but my doc said it does hardly anything). The insertion was painful, & I almost passed out again (vagus nerve proximity), but it was way better than I had been expecting/the Mirena. Thankfully, my gyn didn't need to use the tenaculum to angle my cervix this time. With the Mirena, I was moaning & bedridden the whole rest of the day & couldn't have sex for 3 weeks. With the Mona Lisa, I used a heating pack for 2 days & then had a lot of bleeding for 5-6 days with the most on day 2. I felt comfortable enough to exercise after a week, & have sex 2-3 weeks after (waited more on spotting than on pain). My cervix was very sensitive/responsive (not necessarily painful--just intense) the first 3-4x.
1ST PERIOD
My first period began with spotting on day 27, & the first two days were accompanied by mild intermittent cramping with consistent cramping mid-morning. I'd occasionally experience moderate cramping. I had a "period" for 3ish days, then 5 days of spotting followed by another 8 days of minimal spotting.
NEXT 6 MONTHS
Around week 6, I had random intestinal/gas cramping with dizziness, exacerbated by running (3 cramps). I pooped (not diarrhea) a lot after. I WAS out of shape, but I had ran a half-marathon just 3 months before, for perspective.
My subsequent periods were 9, 12, 11, 9, 10 & 8 days with a lot of flow the first 2-3 days, mild cramping the first 3-7 days & spotting beginning at day 5-8. Early on, I'd get random mild cramping about 3/4 way through my period, & sometimes I'd even have a day off before it would restart again. My periods definitely gradually improved in the first 6 mos. I do not spot throughout the month. After 6 months, my app is predicting 27-28 cycles & 8-10 day periods. Before, my periods were 4-5 days. Keep in mind that most of the "period" is spotting.
SIDE EFFECTS
My test for BV & my biopsy for Lichen Sclerosis both came back negative, but I have noticed that I get pretty irritating itching in my perineum before & after my period. I have tested negative for metal allergies, but I also have had reactions to metals of any kind on my face for a prolonged period of time. Clobetasol has helped (but effects went away after tapering off). Apparently it's a thing to react to copper differently at different times in one's cycle--especially before & after a period. I haven't been able to feel the IUD at all since like month 2 if not earlier.
OVERALL
Overall, I'm super happy with my Mona Lisa 5 Mini. I felt super wronged to have been on a non-vegan pill for 9 years, for the language around IUD's (understating insertion pain & side effects, not universally encouraging them when they're the most common form of BC used by gyns, etc.), & for the minimal availability of IUD's in the US. The increased cramping (from none) & longer periods are worth the vegan option without the hormonal side effects I'd experienced or the spotting & missed pills. but it might not be worth it to everyone. My only suggestion would be to get the new IUB Ballerine Mini because it's supposed to have even less side effects & insertion pain!

I(17f) just started actually dating this guy(18m) About a week ago. I’ve known him for 5 years as my brothers friend and we also dated when we first met but I was too young for a relationship so we decided to just be friends. Now he and I had graduated and started to hangout together a few months ago. Anyways since we started dating I found out he drinks quite often,(every night) and drives like that on occasion wich i personally find quite gross. As well as carrying a gun without a permit or anything for that his grandfather gave him, wich can be okay, but i found him pushing limits (carrying in shared spaces with children and stuff) and not being honest about it etc. the other day he had called my brother and was really upset about one of their other friends(idk what happened but apparently he had said something rude to him that made him mad) but he was on speaker and I heard him saying crazy things like “im gonna bash his head in like a watermelon” and saying he was gonna drive all the way to where he lived and asking for addresses, just crazy things that freaked me out a bit. It caught me off guard to hear that because I’ve only ever seen him level headed and pretty neutral. ANYWAY, the reason I do quite like him is because we go and do really fun stuff like riding motorcycles and we both have the same humor, he’s pretty nice to me and we usually have a lot of fun hanging out. Idk he’s a really interesting person and I certainly have strong feelings for him over the years but I’m just not sure after finding out all these things if I want to put myself into a relationship with someone with these personal habits I guess. Unbiased opinion would help me a lot, my family all likes him so much they just want it to work out so I am getting a lot of stay with him votes. What do you think? 😭

I applied for a few programs and got in however now I'm feeling a sense of regret. I think this regret stems mostly from that fact that knowing I got an acceptance with a conditional of needing to only be 70% or above has gotten to me. Now, I've lost the motivation to study knowing that I'll at least get into somewhere no matter what. Even though the universities that I've been accepted into are the lowest on the list that I'd like to go. I want to stay motivated because I know there are better universities out there that I applied to and can get into but my mind won't stay motivated.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Has anyone experienced this? How do I stop being like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Title pretty much says it all, I read a 3 year old post saying that I should avoid renting near areas were traffic builds up such as tunnel entrances, bridges, etc. Is it because it is noise or because it is unsafe to walk around?
I am specifically looking in Murray Hill and now I'd suspicious that all available apartments are near the Queens tunnel. Any thoughts?
