2024.11.27 23:50 LEGion_42 Initial rank placement might be the main cause of the current match making problem
TLDR: The low match making quality might not be a result of shrinking player base or a broken matchmaking system, but instead a near random initial rank assignment after your first 50 games.
First of all, this is not a complain post (though it does have some complaining). A while ago I started an alt account because a friend of mine was borrowing my main acc to play some games in my library. I did not mean to smurf anyone so I played my best and hope to reach my rank (archon 5) as fast as possible.
However, despite having almost 70% winrate and much better stats on my alt, I was placed at ritualist 6 after reaching 50 games and finishing rank placement. I'm mostly playing solo on both accounts, so there should be little to no outside factor affecting my placement.
This was back in week 4, so if the stats on tracklock were to be believed, my performance on my main account places me in the top 36% of the players, but my performance on my alt is not even top 60%?
A 24% gap is not a reasonable error, and this shows in my games. my recent game on my alt account have a 4:1 KDA (2.9:1 on my main) and I am mostly just using it to practice new heros. And somehow I am still unable to rank up quickly because apparently anyone with in the range of top 10% and top 90% could be placed in ritualist (I have legit met opponent far better than me and teammates that act like new players), so the win/loss of a match became mostly just a coin toss. This creates a laughable scene where my main account (now oracle 2) is winning 12 out my 16 most recent games, while the alt (still at ritualist 6) is only winning 7.
As a result of this broken initial placement system, even a perfect match making algorithm won't be able to match teams appropriately, because the inputs are simply wrong. And since now they are showing average team rating after matches, this does seems to be the case - recent matches on both of my accounts are showing perfectly balanced ratings. If the bad match makings are results of bad algorithm or shrinking player population, MMR should be able to reflect that. Given that the game is still relatively new, only a broken initial placement would result in people with varying skill levels to have the same MMR.
I do not know how they could fuck up this badly, because even a simple winrate based rank placement won't make this kind of error. My guess is that their placement algorithm put too much weight on the first few matches, making placement essentially luck based. My suggestion? I don't know how they could fix the initial placement system but they could use something like an exponentially weighted moving average to weight the rating changes and allow players with consistent good (or bad) performance to rank up (or down) quickly instead of stuck in some MMR hell the system has created and make everyone's experience miserable.
