Hello everyone. Iāve been having some interesting discussions with a friend in my research lab whoās a consequentialist vegan, meaning he focuses on minimizing overall animal suffering rather than taking a rights-based approach. We both have mathematical/logical backgrounds, so our debates tend to be quite structured. Recently, I presented him with an argument that I feel was misunderstood. Hereās a paraphrased version of our exchange:
Friend: āWhen you decide to eat a fish, youāre trading a few minutes of sensory pleasure for the fishās entire life. Is that worth it?ā
Me: āYes, because in everyday life we routinely make decisions that prioritize our own happinessāeven if they cause direct or indirect harm to others (we agreed to refer to animals as āsomeoneā). For instance, youāre eating soy ice cream right now, which also leads to some indirect animal harm in its production. Yet youāre okay with that because it makes you happy.ā
Friend: āThatās the Nirvana fallacy. Veganism doesnāt claim to eliminate all suffering; it aims to reduce it as far as is practicable.ā
We then debated whether this really is the Nirvana fallacy and if thereās a meaningful moral difference between direct and indirect harm. My main points are: (1) from the animalās perspective, it doesnāt matter whether the harm was intentional or accidentalāeither way, they end up dead, and (2) we all do things that harm others for our own enjoyment; itās just a matter of where each of us draws the line. For example, I'm comfortable eating and killing fish, but I'm very uncomfortable eating cows/pigs because of how sentient they are, but again this is *for me*.
Do you think this argument constitutes a Nirvana fallacy?

If i open a new tab and play something on youtube, it gives me an error. If i navigate to a new video on an existing tab it works fine, but not when I open a new one. It also plays fine if I open the video in incognito or in an embedded player. I've restarted my computer and it still happens

Hi! My fiancĆ© and I are planning our wedding but want to keep the guest count at around 100. My fatherās side alone is 80 people and while I want to celebrate and have their support, Iām just not as close with certain family members and donāt want to feel obligated to invite everyone. Is it appropriate to invite some of these family members to a bridal shower and not invite them to the wedding? As in, suggest that the wedding will be smaller but we want to be able to celebrate with those family members on a separate occasion? How can I go about that without being tacky or rude? I know itās my wedding and I can do whatever I want but I come from a family that values tradition; our wedding will be far from traditional and as cost-efficient as possible. Thoughts? Opinions? Flyer in the mail that says, āweāre having a small gathering with close family and friends but weāre thinking of you and if you want to support us in anyway because the economy isnāt great, consider donating to our honeymoon fundā or something along those lines, idk?

Hi, My wife has a nice 2016 2series convertible 50kmiles. We donāt need it anymore as new lease car coming in March. Should i sell it or keep it for my daughter who is 14. It would be stored in a steel garage. My other car is a 2015 5 series which is driving well. I wouldnāt mind driving the 2 series during the summer and storing the 5 series (how would insurance work). My concern is that in 3 years the lease car goes back, my car is done and my daughter is looking for a car at the same time. Any advice on how best to store a car, or should I get rid of it?
