When it comes to my last name, a third of people aren’t phased, a third of people are like, “whoa, that’s so cool!” and third of people don’t believe me.
I was once nearly kicked out of college classroom the first day I transferred into that class a few weeks into the semester and I was letting the professor know. She thought I was just being a prankster walking into random rooms doing that, before a few other students confirmed it was real. Also, back in the day, when Facebook was a thing, I would often have acquaintances BLOCK me before they knew my last name, simply because they thought it was a fake bot account.
It’s a really ridiculous last name, and “cool” or not, it’s really unprofessional-looking.
There are people in my family who have serious prestigious jobs, but those jobs don’t include the general public seeing their name with everything (really anything) they do. As a writer, where my name would to be publicly plastered on every piece I do, what do you think I should do about this absurd name?

2025.01.19 10:21 EmergencyTechnical49 PC/mobo having problems turning on (works fine when it does turn on)
Made this post on techsupport, but maybe this sub is a better place, so trying it here too.
So I have this very old, but still very usable PC that I've been using for years now. Mostly internet browsing / YouTube / streaming / indie games. It's a Intel Core i7 4790K on an Asus Z97-Pro Gamer mainboard, 16GB of RAM, GF 1660Ti. Yeah it's old, but you'd be suprised how well it holds up and serves me perfectly well for all I need.
I don't have a case for that, because I'm lazy and cheap, so the whole thing is just sitting on a mainboard box in the corner of my room. It's been like that for years, never had problems before. If I need to turn it off I either put it to sleep or turn it off, turn the PSU off and have my BIOS set up so that when the PSU is turned on again it powers up. Previously I've also used a kitchen knife or a screwdriver on "power on" pins on the mainboard to turn it on if needed. It always worked.
Now a few weeks ago it suddenly wouldn't turn on after I turn the PSU on. LED on the mainboard stayed off, nothing happened if I did the pins thing, nothing. Dead. And then it just stayed like that for 2 hrs or so, and boom, turned on and worked for a week. Then after that it turned off and again didn't turn on, now for a longer while. Most recently it didn't turn on for around two days, but now last night it did and it is again working perfectly now.
What could be a cause of that? What should I look at? I suspect it's something with the mainboard, but could it be the PSU actually? What steps could I take to diagnose what's going on? Yeah I know I could buy newer parts and put them in a case, but again - when it works it works perfectly for me, so I'd much rather keep it working still? Any ideas?

Hi, my kids have this cheap kids camera with an sd card. In the camera we can see the photo but when we put the sd card in the PC it says it must be formatted.
I tried using chkdsk but it's says not possible due to RAW data format.
I tried stellar recovery tool but it doesn't find the photos we are looking for and i am afraid I have to pay once I want to get them out.
Can you recommend a free recovery tool or method that would help?
I would like to get current photos and then format the card to making working properly again.
I would appreciate if reddit can help me see through this mess of free tools and advertisements when you Google. Thanks!

I (24f) got out of an abusive relationship with J(22m) a few months ago. I was with him for barely a year and he ruined my life. He purposely crashed his car with me in it and I needed help to move for almost a month. Punched holes into my walls and doors, left scorch marks on my door frame, etc. He verbally abused me to the point where I hung myself and started cutting again. I'm out now and after a few months Im in a wonderful relationship with my two partners and they make me stupid happy. The issue is that every now and then I think of him. I listen to a random song and I can see him smiling and dancing to it and it hurts. It's confusing. Especially when he did show up at my house and I freaked. I was terrified. I was so fucking scared I had a panic attack and yet there are these small moments in my head where I remember when he was sweet and it makes me sad. I don't know if in those moments I miss him or not but I do know that the thought of seeing him terrifies me. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to be doing something??? When I'm with my partners I am so happy and I have healed so much along side them. I absolutely love them but I hate these small moments. I need help.

I attended the KSO performance last night of Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony. It can be described in one word - TRAINWRECK. I knew we were in trouble with the opening trumpet call - two clams in four measures. Despite our youthful and enthusiastic conductor Aram Demirjian's flailing arms and furtive handwaving, he didn't seem to have a clue about how this music works. He's conducted Mahler 1 and 4 previously, those are both Mahler "starter symphonies". 5 is real music, and real complicated.
High strings were barely able to be heard especially on complex passages when there were "too many notes" for them to play. Then there was the out-of-tune tympani. Didn't any of these people show up for rehearsal?
I objected strongly to Demirjian spending 20 minutes "explaining" the music to the audience. Mostly wrongly, I might add. He would benefit from reading about Gustav Mahler - staring with the Henry-Louis de La Grange books. And holding Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel up as some kind of model spouse is absurd in the extreme. Demirjian needs to get a grip.
Then let's talk about the audience. People going in-and-out DURING the symphony for bathroom breaks or more drinks (drinks, IN THE HALL? Obscene!). This after the indignity of going thru metal detectors (not done in Chicago, or New York, or LA, or SFO, or Berlin. . . ). People holding up cell phones to picture-take or record during the performance! And then let's not forget the Chinese couple with the screaming baby. . . .
The fundamental problem (besides a conductor that doesn't know his limitations) is the fact that most of the orchestra are part-time amateurs. You can't have a competent orchestra without a full slate of professionals. Lots of small cities do it (Grand Rapids, Madison, WI, etc).
Knoxville, you don't deserve Gustav Mahler. Stick with Star Wars and Christmas Sing-a-longs.

Hey.
Just sharing an idea that would deserve, IMO, to have a mod for it.
Terraria veteran here, I've got enough game experience to know how to min-max pretty much everything, got most of the wiki pages in memory, etc. Just like how it is for a huge chunk of the sub membership, right.
I've thought of another way to give a "fresh" feeling to the game: introducing significantly more severe scarcity.
It could be a "type of world" option, a world seed.
- NPCs would sell gear and accessories at a much, much higher cost. You'd have to save, long and hard, to be able to afford a new item.
- Monster kill drop rates would be divided by 50.
- Fishing chances would be divided by 10.
- Chests wouldn't guarantee anymore an equip, only a really small chance percentage there would be one.
It becomes a MEANINGFUL change, and we're so glad to have it that we adapt our playstyle to that new item, because we don't have plenty of choice anymore.
I've had that inspiration after remembering my skyblock experience (give https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2441677764 a chance guys), a totally empty world save a few prebuilt spaces, without chests everywhere, in which every item dropped by monsters was a new chance of longer survival and made us adapt to the new setup, it was thrilling, I remembered.
In my eyes, at least, I really like the idea, the concept. It would make playing the game feel fresh, to me. Would you guys have thoughts on this?

mich kommen in dem Sommer 3 Freunde aus den USA besuchen und natürlich wollen die sich für ein paar Tage Wien ansehen. Was sind denn Empfehlungen für lässige GasthäuseHeurige/Bars? Preislich halt so gehobene Mittelklasse.
Wohnen werden wir nähe Votivkirche. Muss jetzt natürlich nicht alles im 9ten sein, aber nachdem die ein paar Tage da sein werden, such ich halt eine gesunde Mischung zwischen nah und fern.
Ich kenn noch den Stiftskeller vom Studium, aber keine Ahnung ob der noch empfehlenswert ist. Grundsätzlich such ich halt was eher Uriges, darf aber auch gern z.B. ein guter authentischer Italiener oder Grieche etc. sein. Irgendwer muss den Amis ja mal etwas Kultur beibringen.
Und obwohl ich das jetzt alles so beschrieben hab, wenn ihr irgendeinen Tipp für ein "einzigartiges" Gasthaus habt, also halt was mit irgendeinem coolen Twist für einen Abend nehm ich das auch gern mit.
