Hi everyone,
About four months ago, I adopted a sweet and incredibly smart Border Collie named Leo. He’s been doing great overall, but we’re still working through some challenges related to his past. Leo was abused before I got him, and one lingering issue is his fear of men.
When men get too close, he’ll start barking and posturing, which I understand is his way of expressing fear. However, recently this behavior has escalated to him trying to nip at them. I try to redirect his focus when this happens, but his reactions can be pretty intense and he tends to get tunnel vision.
I’m looking for advice or suggestions from others who might have dealt with similar situations. How can I help Leo manage these reactions better? My approach thus far has been to be patient and gentle and trust that in time he will realize people mean him no harm and, more importantly, that when I am around he'll be safe. With him getting more confident and, in turn, more aggressive, I'm concerned that I need to address this immediately.
