 | Badly need advice on how to cope up or atleast lighten a bit this deeply sad feeling because my 17-year old pet passed away 2 days ago. Her name was Tootsie. She’s my first pet dog and she’s been with me since I was 15 years old. I always knew that she will be one of my biggest heartbreak but I did not expect that she would leave me feeling this empty and brokenhearted. Its like I have lost a sister. 😢 I am feeling deeply sad, missing her, guilty because I felt that I should have done more for her and it feels like there is something heavy on my chest everytime I wake up because I knew that she’s not here with me and I cant see her anymore. I was born in Egypt and spent half my life there. For the other half, I’ve been living in Canada. I have two loving parents who care for me deeply, but my mom has been critically ill since I was little, even to the point of near death. My dad was always focused on taking care of her, so I didn’t get to see them often. After school in Egypt, I’d stay at my grandparents’ house until my parents finished work at 8 p.m. They’d pick me up, we’d spend a couple of hours together, and then the cycle would repeat. I’m not complaining—I’m thankful, as things could have been worse.
However, growing up without my parents around much meant I didn’t learn to study or work hard. Instead, I was pampered by my grandparents, which I think is where my first problem started. I can’t seem to focus or push myself to do much, especially with schoolwork. It’s not because I’m incapable, but I find it hard to apply myself.
When we moved to Canada, we hoped things would improve, but my mom was diagnosed with the same illness again. She was sick for almost four years, one of which she spent in and out of the ICU. Moving here allowed me to spend more time with my parents, but their struggles made them fragile under stress. They snap easily, and while I don’t blame them, it’s hard to talk to them—especially my dad. He has a short temper, and we argue often, even though I love him deeply, and I know he loves me too.
Right now, I’m in grade 12 and struggling to focus in school. I used to be a top student, but now I procrastinate constantly and compare myself to others. My room is always a mess, and I can’t bring myself to clean or do anything productive. I feel hopeless and don’t know how to motivate myself to study or work on anything important.
Another issue I’m dealing with is pornography and masturbation. I really want to quit. I’m close to my religion, which I deeply love, and I want to overcome this to better myself and prepare for my future wife. I was raised in the church, and it’s always been a part of my life, but this habit feels like it’s holding me back from living up to my values.
Speaking of my future wife, I met a girl about a year and a half ago, and I’ve fallen completely in love with her. I want to change so I can be the best version of myself for her. She’s the complete opposite of me—always studying, consistent at the gym, and pushing herself. I feel like I don’t deserve her because she’s everything I want to be. I know it must be exhausting for her to push me to improve, and I feel guilty for not meeting her efforts. I want to change for both her and myself, but I feel like it might be too late.
On top of all this, I’ve been slacking spiritually. My faith is very important to me and has been a part of my life since childhood, but I’ve neglected it recently. My church is where I met my friends and community, but I feel disconnected from it now.
Overall, I really want to change, but I don’t know where to start. Even writing this has been difficult because I lack motivation, but I know I need to take this step for myself. I want to get rid of laziness and procrastination, pornography and become a better person. Please, I need help.
