Ok so Lemons and Pears. Probably the signature track of Edu's Album "Sketches 3D", and one of the most listened ones on Spotify. Lemons and Pears is the sixth track out of nine. The meaning of the song has never been clarified by Andrew therefore leaving a perfect spot for us, the listeners to fill and discuss.
So today I am going to discuss my one theory, two different endings of Lemons and Pears. (TW for first: suicide. TW for second: Murder.)
So the song starts with "I asked Lemon 'please get off my mind', she said 'I can't do that, I'm confined'." First of all, referring to the Lemon as a "she" already (probably) tells us Lemon is a woman. Secondly, "please get off my mind" and "I can't do that I'm confined" could indicate that the narrator of the song (our first Pear) could not stop thinking of lemon to the point she started talking to him in his thoughts. My assumption is that they went through a breakup. Then the song goes "I think it's unfair that you can't breathe, please be nice pretend it's Christmas Eve" which I think could mean the first Pear of our story knows he is delusional or just imagining her in his mind and to him it's not so nice. "You've been stuck here since forember, can't you just remember how to go?" Again, he just wants his ex to leave him alone, him physically and him in his mind, he wants her to go. "She said 'I'm really sorry it's not me'" probably our Lemon telling our first Pear that what his mind makes her say to him in his thoughts is not her. She then continued "can't you tell this to your diary?" (Basically telling the Pear to maybe tell this to a professional or someone else but not her since it isn't her problem anymore.) she then proceeds to tease him or to taunt him by telling him "listen, l've moved on, l've met a boy named pear, he's the sweetest multi-pearionaire." Which he does not take so well, and goes "you've been stuck here since forember, can't you just remember how to go?" Then the chorus starts;
"No, it's impossible, no it's infeasible, no, it's improbable, no, it's ungrapesable." First of all nice word play Andrew. But let's get back to our subject. Between the "No"s of "it's impossible" and "it's improbable" we hear what I assume to be a gunshot. Here is where my theory starts.
- The Narrator (first Pear) tries to commit suicide due to not being able to take it anymore. He does not know how to handle the breakup with his Lemon, therefore tries to shoot himself.
- The narrator gets so jealous that he couldn't hold back anymore, goes and searches for new Pear and shoots him twice.
Now we have another verse
"Next time that I'll think of you I'll say 'I hope you have a really rotten day', then you'll say 'I'm sorry I was wrong, you and me will always have our song and get along'."
The Narrator imagines an interaction (before the two possibilities l've written regarding the chorus) between him and Lemon, where he wishes ill upon Lemon (very immature I must say) and Lemon apologises for rubbing her new relationship in his face while he's still trying to deal with the breakup, and reminds him that no matter what they shared some nice moments together. But again, this is all imagined, and again he repeats "you've been stuck here since forember, can't you just remember how to go?"
And the last verse is "no, (gunshot sound) it's impossible, no, it's infeasible, no, (gunshot sound) it's improbable, no, it's impeachable" which Lemon and Pear sing together this time. (Yes there is a female voice I'm sure you noticed). Again nice wordplay. That's all, my theory is complete. Basically after the last verse the murder / suicide takes place.
(Note: Hey, this is RD. please note that English isn’t my first language and that the theory is solely how I view it, and I respect all of the other theories out there. This is also my first time posting or ever interacting with the tally hall community on Reddit.)
