2025.01.23 13:29 Syutkam First time feeling truly supervised: Reflecting on harsh but valuable feedback from reviewers
Today, I received the decision on my manuscript submitted to New Media & Society, one of the top journals in my field. It was rejected.
Reading through the reviewers’ comments, I realized my manuscript was heavily criticized—it felt like it was torn apart. Surprisingly, though, I didn’t feel sad or angry. Instead, I felt deeply touched. It was the first time I experienced what it’s like to be supervised by someone truly knowledgeable in my field.
Unfortunately, my advisor hasn’t been actively involved in research for the past ten years. She doesn’t even know that ethics approval is required for studies involving people. While I know I can’t rely on her for research guidance, I am still grateful that she accepted me into her seminar after I experienced power harassment from my previous supervisor.
Over the past two years, I’ve worked tirelessly to improve my English, enhance my data analysis skills, and build my academic foundation. One silver lining has been taking classes in another department and receiving guidance from a professor who specializes in psychology. (I received a lot of valuable feedback and guidance from him. He’s one of the most respectable professors I’ve had the chance to learn from.)
Last year, I attended an international conference hoping to connect with researchers working on related topics, but I couldn’t find anyone, nor did I receive valuable feedback. On top of that, I’ve come across some questionable papers in top journals, which has sometimes made me feel…I don’t know…
But today was different. When I read the comments from the two reviewers, I couldn’t stop crying. Their words were harsh, and I could tell they were frustrated with the poor writing and flawed logic of my paper. Yet, despite that frustration, they still took the time to read it carefully and provided me with thoughtful, detailed suggestions—not just for improving the manuscript but also for how to write professional academic papers in general. I feel so sorry for wasting their time with such a messy submission, but I’m incredibly grateful. It felt like I had a supervisor sitting right in front of me, reviewing my work sentence by sentence—not holding back their anger but still giving me invaluable insights.
I don’t know how to fully express it, but today I feel so moved. For the first time, I feel like I’ve met good mentors—people in my field of communication who are genuinely invested in supervising students.

Hello! Been using the MacBook for a while now. Recently I’ve run into a very frustrating issue. Every day after work i usually keep the MacBook on sleep as there might be some pending works which i complete the next day morning. Now, since the past month when i try to resume my work the next morning i started noticing that my network has been disconnected. Surprisingly only google works, but the rest of the applications or websites don’t work. I have to restart the MacBook to get the network back to normal again. Did anyone else face this issue and could anyone here help me out?
