2025.01.23 19:00 No-Bike-5209 Walmart & Sam's Club Latest Anti-Consumer/Worker Practice
I currently work at a Sam's Club, and we just got an announcement that everyone in the store has to start pushing Scan & Go on members immediately. The reason is that starting next year, all Sam's Clubs are planning on switching to using Scan & Go exclusively. No more registers or even self checkouts. I find this extremely problematic for three main reasons right off the bat.
- This is anti-worker. This is clearly a move motivated by a profit margin, because it means the company gets to eliminate about a third of their workforce. No more cashiers or self checkout monitors.
- In addition to alienating people who are older or just generally not as comfortable using something like Scan & Go, this also seems like an anti-poor move. The company is essentially saying, "If you can't afford a smartphone compatible with our app, you're not allowed to shop here."

Maybe this isn't the right time or place to cry about it, I'm sorry. I bought my tiny 900 square foot house in Berea back in 2001 for $100,000. At the time, everyone said I paid way too much for it because it was too small and needed a lot of work. An old woman lived here before me and never updated the house except roof and furnace. It was built in 1950. It needed everything. Market value when I bought the house was $97,000 and that didn't change much until 2022. It went up to $126,000. Now, in 2024, it has jumped to a market value of $173,800. I didn't do anything to this house except new windows I bought back in 2001. The paint is peeling, the driveway is total shit. I haven't done anything to this house since i moved in. And I never fucking will. I will not put one fucking penny into this house. Why should I? So my taxes can go up even more!??? It's barely worth $100,000 the way it is. Wtf is going on? I have no one to talk to about this. My neighbors are all old as fuck, cant talk to them. My parents are half dead, they live in Florida. I'm just going to sit here and cry for now.

In a fully online class where all assignments, midterms, and finals are supposed to be online. We’re supposed to use Zoom and LockDown Browser for exams, but there’s a technical issue—launching LockDown Browser seems to shut down Zoom. The professor mentioned they’re trying to fix it, but if it’s not resolved before the midterm, we’ll get further instructions on how to proceed. It’s all kind of vague and up in the air right now.
Has anyone been in a situation like this? Is it normal or even allowed for an online class to suddenly switch to in-person exams last minute? Just trying to figure out what to expect. Thanks!
