I’m a relatively new fan of the Chargers, having started following them during COVID from India. Because of that, I didn’t experience the San Diego fiasco firsthand. Like many others, I’ve spent a fair share of time criticizing and venting frustration at Dean Spanos. I saw him as a cost-cutting owner, hiring inexpensive coaches, letting his son meddle in the drafting and hiring processes, and pinning the blame on Tom Telesco when things went south.
But credit where credit is due. After seeing how teams like the Bengals and Cowboys struggle to pay marquee free agents, I’ve got to admit: Dean has stepped up. He’s put the money on the table for big signings like Justin Herbert, Derwin James, and JC Jackson (even though I hate JC). He’s also invested in a state-of-the-art practice facility.
What really surprised me was the hiring of Jim Harbaugh. I didn’t think we’d even be able to afford a coach like him along with his assistants. Even if we could, I figured Dean wouldn’t want him because it wouldn’t allow his son to interfere with drafting. But here we are—Dean not only hired Jim but also gave him control of football operations, along with bringing in Joe Hortiz.
Compared to teams like the Jets, Cowboys, Browns (too meddlesome), Saints, Colts (too hands-off), and Bengals (too cheap), I genuinely feel like our ownership deserves more credit. They’re staying out of the way and letting football minds do their job, all while working with the resources they have. Dean might be one of the “poorest” owners in the league (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), but he’s doing his best.
We’ve also got an awesome social media team, brilliant football minds like Jim, a generational QB in Herbert, and a culture that’s turning us into an attractive destination for free agents. Sure, the pain of being a Chargers fan is constant—I learned that the hard way in my first year of fandom, which ended with a timeout and a field goal in Las Vegas—but I believe in our QB and HC combo.
Let’s sit back and enjoy this ride. If everything goes well, maybe I’ll get the chance to attend a game at SoFi in 2025, for which I am very excited. Being a fan in India, I haven’t seen any other NFL fan. I would love to experience the environment at least once.
