Hello CA State Employees,
Just wanted to do a little comparison of benefits from the state and with Kaiser. I am contemplating of moving to the state to get a hybrid/remote job. I know we can't compare everything and there are different bargaining unit, but I would just like to gain a little insight of how it is for state employees. I hope I can get a few good responses. I am not going to include pay, as its already a given.
- Time off benefits for state employees? Have you ever been denied time off? At Kaiser I am currently getting 24 hrs PTO (Vacation & Sick) per month or 7.2 weeks a year. We also have 40 hours education leave every year for CE units & ESL (Sick leave for surgeries or if hospitalized) 8 hours per month.
- Pension calculation for state employees? At Kaiser its 2% of your salary for the first 20 years then 1% for the next 10 years. So if worked for 20 years it would be $1XX,000 * 20 * 0.02.
- Health benefits for the state? At Kaiser both health & dental are free. Healthcare is obviously Kaiser and I chose Delta Dental. How much do state employees pay?
- Work life balance in your department? I know this is subjective, but I was hoping to see if there are any people working from CDPH who can give some insight?

TLDR; Watching your favorite English show in German subtitles improves your reading & writing a lot!
I'd like to share with you a trick that has worked really well for me, when it comes to understanding written German and it helped a lot with my writing.
I have basically learnt English by watching tons of content, on top of a mediocre school education. I have my favorite TV shows which I have watched 4-5 times now.
I started watching Brooklyn 99 on German subtitles, and boy have I learnt a lot.. I soon realized that since many of us don't get the German exposure (mostly in written form) from school while growing up, like English, there are so many things we need to catch up on. And using this method has improved me a lot. I started chatting with my colleagues in German thanks to this technique!
I thought before trying, that it wouldn't work so well as I wouldn't hear the language. But focusing on the text by hearing the English has opened so many connections for me.
I also share some details about my level so that you can also estimate if that method would work for you;
I am currently on A2 level and didn't do any classes yet (not planning to either). I have a Grammatik textbook that I am studying but as importantly I listen to a lot of German songs and analyze the lyrics with ChatGPT. So hearing the language is also there, even though it can be improved.

Before writing my question im making this post for a friend, ive already advised him to call 1944 for tax inquiries but he keeps urging me to make this post.
His father is retired. His family gets money from his eldest sister who sends him money from abroad every month and from interest from savings. Now the family house and car is under the fathers name. Back in 2022 or when ever the IRD was urging people to open a tax account, he has opened an account for his father.
But they did not file any taxes in 2023/2024. How should they go about filing income taxes? do they just forget the 2023/2024 period. I was helping him go through the IRD website and they ask questions such as
- source of income - cost / value of house - cost and value of car - amount of jewelry? - cash in hand?

Derzeit schwanke ich zwischen PFH Gottingen (dort kann ich mir 41 ETC anrechnen lassen) und der IU. Hat jemand mit der konkreten Frage Erfahrung, ist ja eine ziemlich geläufige Kombination, denke ich. Wie viel ETCs kann ich mit an der IU für BWL anrechnen lassen?
Natürlich sollte man die Auswahl der FH nicht rein nach der Anrechnung entscheiden, dennoch ein wichtiger Punkt.
