Iāve been getting in to Kendrickās discography more recently and Iāve been really coming to appreciate all the subtle nuances and meanings etched into his song. Particularly, I always come back to TPAB, due to the poetic significance behind every lyric and instrument. For many of the tracks, Iāve had to listen countless times to even begin to wrap my head around them.
Preamble aside, one track Iāve been playing constantly has been Alright. Itās catchy, the flow is insane, itās endlessly replayable. On the surface level, itās a triumphant track, and glossing over it or listening to it once or twice, it does seem that way. However, while listening to it, it never felt quite right; sinister, like something is lurking beneath the surface.
One thing that, while a bit embarrassing, I never picked up on the first few times is the saxophone in the background. Itās there, but it can get lost in the flurry of everything else thatās happening in the song. Well, on my most recent listen, I was struck by it. It an ever present and almost mocking, the way it plays and mimics behind Kendrickās lyrics.
Knowing Kendrick and his use of Lucifer, especially in TPAB, thatās where my mind went to first. To me, Lucifer represents that ever present temptation that surrounds Kendrick. The voice that calls to him, to deceive him with surface level, unfulfilling worldly pleasures. Forbidden fruit if you will.
In alright, although it seems like Kendrick has overcome hardship and evil, that saxophone is always in there, like a nagging presence. All I can say is it feels sinister whenever I listen to the song
Anyway, like I said Iām still wrapping my head around Kendrickās deep themes and lyrics. like I said though, this just struck me and changed my perception of the song.
