2025.01.30 22:01 FollowingOutside1986 Do you consider myopia to be a disease?
Hello - I'm a (shortsighted) journalist writing a piece for a British magazine about the huge rise in myopia across the world. Basically 1/2 of the world is predicted to need glasses by 2050 and 10% of people are predicted to be high myopic (-6 or above). Which as we know can lead to retinal detachment, macular degeneration and potentially sight loss.
Writing this has made me reassess my own condition - partly as all the researchers insist that yes myopia is a disease not just a pain in the *** as I had considered it.
I'd be interested to hear if people consider their myopia as a disease. And then the other question I have is: what do you wish you had known?
The two basic reasons given for the high increase at a population level are 1) children are not spending enough time outdoors... two hours a day is recommended for healthy eye growth and 2) too much 'near-work', ie focusing on things close to your face, books, homework and of course phones, iPads, Switches, etc. This is less well evidenced than outdoors, but every researcher I've spoken to has mentioned it as a huge concern, particularly with very young children.

2025.01.30 22:01 Minimum-South-9568 What have your recent buy Canadian or buy non-American purchases been?
I’ve always tried to buy local first, then Canadian, then American, then others. I’ve completely changed now—I will buy an alternative as long as it’s not American.
Recently, I didn’t buy my usual cascades dishwashing detergent pods because it simply said “imported for ….” without the country where it was imported from. I’m assuming it’s an integrated North American product with considerable US content. Instead I bought compliments generic brand detergent pods “made in Italy” (hasn’t made me sexier as far as I can tell).
Today, I was looking for an environmentally friendly product to renew the water repellant effect on my ski wear and ended up choosing granger (UK based company with mostly local manufacturing in Derbyshire and bluesign certified) instead reviveX (Bellingham, WA based company).
What unusual products have you recently found to avoid buying American, and preferably Canadian or at least European/CPTPP manufactured?

Hey!
I've never worked with local LLMs or custom-trained models before, but I'm a programmer looking to build an app where users can teach an AI by answering questions. The goal is for other users to later interact with these personalized AI models, essentially chatting with AI versions of other users.
For example, User A might answer a set of questions about their interests, personality, or expertise, and the LLM would use that data to generate responses in their style. Later, User B could start a conversation with "User A's AI" and get responses that mimic User A's way of thinking.
What would be the best approach for implementing this? Any advice on frameworks, models, or best practices would be greatly appreciated!
Am I going to be able to achieve that with local LLM's? If yes, I'd be very happy if you could guide me towards the resources I need to know how to implement this.
