Thought I would post my experience with delta having a "seat request" ticket. I had three legs to the flight and only the last one had the seat requested thing. Prior to booking tickets, I read posts and replies from people reassuring your seat is guaranteed. I'm afraid that is not true. The last flight was oversold by like 20+ seats, and in that case, if not enough people volunteer, you will most definitely not have a seat on that flight. Delta offered a gift card and a space with another airline at a later time, so I volunteered to have the certainty that I would be able to flight out that same day. However, I noticed there were misscomunications between delta and the other airline. Delta appeared to have transferred more passengers than the other flight could take, thus causing some people that chose to volunteer not have a seat on the other flight. Also, by the time passengers realized that, they had no other option since the delta flight had already departed. I think a woman got a seat last minute by pure luck. So in short, basic economy doesn't guarantee you get a seat, and you should take that into consideration when buying your tickets.
