2025.02.02 00:48 windsorHaze Asked Deepseek-R1 a simple riddle.

I have deepseek-r1 14b running locally. Gave it a simple riddle. And I got a massive novel of output text of it trying to reason its way out of a wet paper bag.
>>> when is a horse not a horse of course? Okay, so I'm trying to figure out when a horse isn't considered a "horse" in the context of the riddle "When is a horse not a horse?" I remember hearing this riddle before, but I want to understand it better. Let me break it down step by step.
First, the riddle is playing on words, right? It's using a pun or a play on words to create confusion. So the answer isn't about the animal itself but more about the meaning of the word "horse."
I think of different meanings for the word "horse." The most common one is the actual animal, like a thoroughbred or a pony. But I know that in English, there are other uses of the word "horse." For example, in phrases like "a horse of a different color," which means something entirely different.
Wait, but maybe it's about parts of speech? Like if you change the form of the word, does it stop being a noun and become another part of speech? But that doesn't seem to fit the riddle exactly.
Another thought: sometimes in riddles, they use homonyms or words that sound alike. So "horse" could be pronounced the same as another word but mean something different. For example, "hoarse." A hoarse is a type of fish, right? Or wait, no, a hoarse is actually a large sea creature, like a sealion or something else? Hmm, I'm not entirely sure about that.
Wait, maybe it's simpler than that. The riddle could be pointing out that if you remove a letter from "horse," it becomes something else. Let me try: H-O-R-S-E. If I take away the 'h', it's O-R-S-E, which doesn't make sense. Take away the 'O' and you get H-R-S-E, still nothing. Remove 'R'? H-O-S-E. Oh! Hose! That's a common word. So if you remove the letter 'H' from "horse," you get "orse," but that's not right. Wait, actually, taking away the first letter 'H' gives "orse," which isn't a standard English word. But maybe it's about rearranging letters?
Alternatively, maybe it's about the pronunciation. If you pronounce "horse" differently, does it mean something else? I don't think so. Maybe in another language?
Wait, let me go back to homonyms. Another possibility is that "horse" can refer to a type of card game or something else entirely. Or perhaps it's a play on words like "You mount a horse," but then again, that's still the animal.
Oh! I think I remember now. The riddle is often answered by pointing out that if you remove a letter from "horse," specifically the 'h', you get "orse." But "orse" isn't a word. However, in some contexts, maybe it's pronounced differently? Or perhaps it's a typo for another word.
Wait, no. Another angle: when is a horse not a horse? The answer could be when it's a different kind of "horse," like a "roaring horse," but that still refers to the animal. Maybe in heraldry or something?
No, wait, I think I'm overcomplicating it. The riddle is likely a play on words where the word "horse" refers not to the animal but to another meaning. For example, in the context of a ship's parts, there's something called a "horses," like the supports for the rigging. But that still doesn't make sense.
Wait, no, I think it's simpler: when you take away one letter from "horse," it becomes "orse." But since that's not a word, maybe it's pronounced differently? Or perhaps it's a play on the word itself without altering letters.
Oh! Maybe it's about the plural. Horses are animals, but if it's just "horse" singular, then it is a horse. Wait, no, that doesn't make sense either.
I'm getting stuck here. Let me try another approach. I think the riddle is answered by pointing out that a horse isn't a "horse" when you remove a letter from its name, turning it into another word. So if you take away an 's' from "horse," you get "hore." But "hore" isn't a standard English word either.
Wait, maybe it's about the definition. A horse is a mammal, but perhaps when it's in a different context, like a rocking horse, it's not a real horse. So the answer could be that if it's a toy or something else, then it's not a real horse. But I think the riddle expects a wordplay rather than a definition.
Another thought: sometimes riddles use homophones. For example, "horse" sounds like "hoarse," which is an adjective meaning having a deep, rough voice. So if you're referring to a hoarse, it's not a horse. But I'm not sure if that's the intended answer.
Wait, maybe the answer is "when it's a 'horses' in plural form? No, because horses are still horses."
Alternatively, the riddle could be answered by saying when it's part of another word or phrase. For example, "horsepower" includes "horse," but that's not making it not a horse.
I think I'm overcomplicating this. The classic answer is likely about removing a letter to form another word. So taking away the 'h' from "horse" gives "orse." But since "orse" isn't a standard English noun, perhaps it's pronounced as "orse," which doesn't make sense. Alternatively, maybe it's "horse" without the 's,' making "hor e," but that's not helpful.
Wait, no, I think the correct answer is that if you remove the letter 'h' from "horse," you get "orse," which isn't a word. But sometimes riddles use this to trick you because it sounds like "or se" or something else. Alternatively, maybe it's about the spelling in another language.
I'm still not getting it. Let me look up similar riddles to see if I can find a pattern. Oh, wait, I think the answer is that when you take away one letter from "horse," you get "orse." But since that's not a word, perhaps it's a play on the homophone where "horse" sounds like another word.
Alternatively, maybe it's about the definition: a horse is an animal with four legs, but if it's a rocking horse, it doesn't have four legs. So in that context, it's not a real horse.
Wait, I think I remember now. The riddle is answered by saying when you remove the 'h' from "horse," you get "orse." But since that's not a word, perhaps the answer is that it's not a horse because it's spelled differently or because it's something else entirely, like a homophone.
Alternatively, maybe the answer is more straightforward: when it's a different type of "horse," like in the context of a ship's parts, such as "horses" being supports on a rolling sea. But that seems less likely.
I think I'm going around in circles here. Let me try to sum up what I know:
- The riddle is a play on words. - It involves the word "horse." - The answer likely involves altering the word or its pronunciation.
Given that, I believe the classic answer is that when you remove the 'h' from "horse," it becomes "orse." But since "orse" isn't a standard English word, perhaps the riddle is pointing out this phonetic change. Alternatively, maybe it's about the sound of the word, like pronouncing it differently.
Wait, another thought: in some dialects or accents, words can sound different. So if you say "horse" with a different accent, it might sound like another word. For example, "horsé" could be misheard as something else. But I'm not sure about that.
Alternatively, maybe the answer is that when you write "horse" without the 'h,' it's "orse," which isn't a horse but perhaps a misspelling or another term.
Wait, I think I've heard the answer before: "When you remove the letter 'H' from 'horse,' you get 'orse,' which isn't a real word. So when is a horse not a horse? When it's an 'orse!'"
But that seems a bit forced because "orse" isn't a standard word, so maybe the riddle is more about tricking you with pronunciation or spelling.
Alternatively, maybe it's about parts of speech again. If you change "horse" into a verb, like to horse someone around, but that still refers to the animal.
Wait, I think I'm overcomplicating this. The answer is likely that when you remove the 'h' from "horse," you get "orse." So the riddle plays on the fact that removing a letter changes it into something else, even if it's not a standard word.
So, in summary, the riddle is a play on words where by altering the letters of "horse," specifically removing the 'h,' it becomes "orse," which isn't a real word. Therefore, when you take away an 'h' from "horse," you get something that's not a horse.
The riddle "When is a horse not a horse?" plays on wordplay and letters. The answer lies in altering the word "horse" by removing one of its letters, specifically the letter 'H.' Removing this results in the word "orse," which isn't a standard English word. Thus, the riddle tricks you into considering that changing the spelling slightly can make it seem like something else, even if it's not a real word.
**Answer:** When you remove the letter 'H' from "horse," you get "orse." Therefore, when is a horse not a horse? When it's an "orse"!

I mean it keeps time fine, even really accurately but even after a full service working the crown feels somehow both sticky and slippery at the same time.
If someone out there has an excellent condition PT5000 or ST2130 they can part with for cheap(er) I'm thinking of swapping it in.

I've had this problem for a while and it seems like nobody else really knows what I'm talking about. I set a ringtone for certain calls and instead of playing it, it just goes "ding... ding...". I have a video of it doing it on my account, but nobody commented. It takes a minute for me to answer calls now because I can never hear it ring.

2025.02.02 00:48 lavradoodle Advice for chronic chillblains?

Advice for chronic chillblains? Hi, I get chronic chillblains that usually start around fall and last till the spring or so. They get triggered really bad throughout the day and become red, swollen, itchy and painful, usually when exposed to heat like steamy food when cooking, holding a hot mug, being in a really warm room, sweaty hands or feet, sometimes from too warm of socks or gloves. But they also seem to get triggered from the cold/my toes fingers get really painful when cold. I also have raynauds. I do not know how to go about my life and do all my daily tasks without triggering my chillblains and I haven’t found anything that helps ease the discomfort when they are triggered. Also, it’s hard for me to regulate my body temperature because I work mostly outdoors and then have to go indoors sometime to work where they blast the heater, resulting in extreme temp changes that trigger the chillblains more :/ does anyone have any advice or has anyone found anything that helps them?
