 | I am very interested in cute jfashion, and I’ve read here that JiraiKei isn’t just black & pink, but at the same time, I think my aesthetic is something a bit softer & sweeter than what I’ve seen here. I am only asking here because JiraiKei seems to be the only active jfashion community I can find.. so if I don’t fit in here, I feel like I wouldn’t have a community to participate in.. 2024.11.25 19:40 IssueCertain Mac M4 Pro vs Ryzen 9950x for computational science
Hi everyone,
I am working as a researcher in computational science, and my workflows often comprise signal processing (in parallel, of many files), simulations of systems with many differential equations and many evolving variables, machine learning, and also some full stack web development (python/dash/javascript) etc. This often relies on numpy python libraries. Most of the time the simulations are running for hours (sometimes overnight). I mostly use Linux for software development, but I wouldn't mind switching to mac. Portability is important, but compute power is a priority (I'm fine with buying a desktop, and using my old laptop when portability is required). CPU processing power is the most important for the type of applications I use, but a dedicated GPU would be nice to start doing some deep learning on my data.
My current system is a laptop with an intel i7-11800h (8 cores/16 threads), 64 GB RAM (DDR4, 3200 MhZ), and nvidia 3050 Ti.
I am considering buying a new machine. These are the options which I currently have in mind, and which are within my budget:
- A Macbook Pro laptop, 16 inch, with an M4 Pro chip, and 48GB Unified memory, 1TB HDD
- A desktop system with a Ryzen 9950X, 96 GB RAM (6000 Mhz), and an nVidia 4080 Super 16 GB, 4TB HDD, motherboard GIGABYTE X870E
On Geekbench, the mac M4 Pro seems to top the Ryzen 9950X.
However, if I check Phoronix benchmarks ( https://www.phoronix.com/review/apple-m4-intel-amd-linux ), Ryzen 9950X seems to be 4-5 times faster than an M4 (comparison with M4 base, not with M4 Pro).
I find it difficult to judge whether these benchmarks predict the performance I would get for my type of application (computational science, python numpy, a lot of matrix multiplication, web development).
What would you recommend ?
