Events in this story may or may not coincide with canon, but none of this is intended to be, or replace canon events. If it contradicts such, consider this story taking place in an Alternate Universe, with my apologies.
This chapter is a little bit shorter; sorry, I'm working on that.

I opened my eyes and immediately regretted it. On one hand, I was still alive, and I didn’t mean to be ungrateful for that, but on the other hand, I had the worst headache since Spring Break of 2125. Even the subdued lighting of the escape pod felt like mining lasers boring holes through my skull. Through the pain, I knew I needed to assess my situation. Okay, I thought, I’m in an escape pod. Wen will have a field day when the team picks me up, there’s no avoiding that… Running my fingers across my forehead, I winced as I brushed against the swollen lump that served as a reminder of the fight my head lost with the panel. No blood, that’s good. Blood. Oh, that reminds me…
Shit! Where’s my sidearm? I reached to my holster, but –
“Looking for this, predator?”
The high-pitched voice was familiar. For a moment, I couldn’t remember why, but as I turned to look for the speaker, the first thing I noticed was a ten-millimeter barrel staring back at me. A very familiar barrel, in fact -- I just wasn’t used to seeing it from this angle.
Yep. The Farsul is holding me at gunpoint with my own gun. I’m NEVER gonna live this down…assuming I live through it, of course. Okay, Tom. No sudden movements, and don’t provoke them into doing something bad for your health.
“Ah, well uh…not particularly. I mean, I wasn’t planning to use it. Mostly for safety’s sake, you know?” I slurred, realizing that I hit my head pretty hard earlier. “Armor piercing rounds in that thing, I wouldn’t want to breach the hull of the pod and lose good air, right?” I hoped that they weren’t aware that it was actually loaded with frangible ammunition precisely because breaching a ship’s hull is not something you usually want to do, assuming you like breathing. And I hoped that the concussion I surely had wasn’t making me sound as full of shit as I actually was. My head felt like it was full of sand, and I was having a hard time focusing on anything more than how desperately I wanted to go to sleep…yeah, definitely a concussion…
“That’s not a problem, monster. Our escape pod landed on the planet half a paw ago.” They rolled their eyes at me. Apparently not just a human reaction. Interesting.
Feeling somewhat relieved and still incredibly groggy, I nodded. “That’s good. That’s good. Really good. Wait…wait, wait, wait. Why are you still in here with me? Bad atmosphere? Acid rain? Why not, you know,” I held my hand up, pointing my index and middle fingers down, wiggling them both, “get out and get away?” Something wasn’t adding up, but I couldn’t quite place my finger on it. What was I missing?
They sighed, lowering the gun briefly. “I wish I could. There are two reasons I can’t. Reason one, your stupid predator ass is blocking the hatch. Reason two, my leg was injured, and your stupid predator ass is sitting between me and the first aid case.”’
I nodded in what I hoped appeared to be thoughtful. “Hmm…yeah, I can see how that’d be a problem. I’m guessing you don’t want me to move closer to you, but you also don’t want to get any closer to me. You probably wanted to kill me, but you realized that then you’d have to move a big stupid predator out of your way, and with your leg hurt that would probably be awfully hard to do.” A thought surfaced in my mind. I hoped it was a clever thought, but either way, I had to play the hand I’d been dealt. “And you might have already realized that you can’t shoot me with my own gun, since it’s got a biometric lock, and won’t respond to your paws,” I said, wiggling my index finger. “…So, you are bluffing to try to get me to cooperate with you, aren’t you?” I raised an eyebrow and gave a little smirk, remembering to keep my mouth closed. I wanted to pull off smug, without being frightening. I didn’t want to provoke them into doing anything stupid, after all.
It must’ve been my lucky day, because the Farsul looked down at the gun in their paw, let out a heavy sigh, and placed my pistol down on the bench between us, before back up at me with tears welling in their eyes. “Speh. Stars brahking SPEH! I…I guess you win, predator. Just…just kill me quickly, please.”
Cautiously, I reached out and took hold of my sidearm. A slight press back on the slide confirmed that it was still loaded, as I expected. Returning it to my holster, I sat up, trying not to wobble too much. My head still felt like a Mazic had been taking tap-dancing lessons on it.
“I don’t think that’s necessary right now. Besides, do you have any idea how loud it would be, shooting that thing” I said, pointing at my pistol, “in here? No, thank you.” Resting my hands on my knees and looking at the Farsul, I continued. “I think we both need to see that first aid kit, so I’m going to turn around and get it. I’ll need you to read what’s in there, if you want me to take care of that leg for you, umm…uh…I’m sorry -- what’s your name, anyway?”

Humans have always gotten sick and we never truly knew why until recently. This didn’t stop us from coming up with numerous theories that were all based off of whatever information we already had. All of our theories for why we got sick were all extremely wrong, then we invented the microscope and discovered an entire universe and life forms coexisting with ours.
Why then is the current Phenomenon any different? Something unknown is going on, and so we draw on our current knowledge to try and explain it, and yet we most likely are again extremely wrong. How in the world would a medieval peasant been able to infer that the reason he got a fever was because the billions of cells in his body were forming an immune system response to billions of evil life forms reproducing in his body to ultimately try and kill him? Why then is the current phenomenon any different?
Microbiology has already shown us that reality is more complex and strange than we could possibly ever conceive. I don’t think for a second that the lights in the sky are going to have an explanation that we could derive from mere observation. A million years of observing illness wouldn’t get us any closer to discovering germs unless we had a microscope. A million years of observing the phenomenon won’t get us any closer to the truth until we develop some new form of technology that lets us actually study what’s going on.
Every theory we have today is going to be completely wrong then, we are observing the cause and then trying to describe it through the lens of our current culture. It must be aliens, it must be demons, it must be interdimensional. We only throw these terms around because that’s all we know, that’s our only frame of reference. We are just like the medieval peasant trying to figure out illness, it must be god, it must be demons, it must be something spiritual. We would’ve never guessed our bodies are made up of billions of life forms working together to create our consciousness, and we will never guess what the phenomenon is via direct observation of the evidence.
I don’t know what the phenomenon is, all I know is that not a single person on this earth knows what the phenomenon is unless they’ve developed a quantum phenomenon detector or something of the sorts.

2025.01.18 03:42 Cdb1414 Do you ever get intimidated starting a new project?
So far the metalcore band I'm in has released four singles and two EPs (each with four tracks) within the last 6 years.
Last year, we released an EP, and I’ve decided I want to push myself further by writing a full-length album.
The thing is, I’ve been procrastinating because I’m nervous. I’ve only worked on singles and EPs, so the idea of putting together a full album with 10-12 tracks feels daunting.
I know that releasing singles and EPs is considered the "best" approach these days, but creating a full-length album has always been a personal goal of mine. Plus, we could still release like five singles from the album before its full release or even release each song one by one. Either way we're pushing for an album.
I think my issue is I want to take our band into a somewhat different direction but I guess I'm scared of veering off of what we're "known" for. So that mixed with having to write a lot more songs is sort of stressing me out a bit lol
Also to give a little insight of how the band works were sort of just an internet band. It's only me and the vocalist (he does screaming). I track all the guitars and his vocals at home and the bass/drums are all MIDI. Then we just send the tracks out to get mix and mastered. I write all of the instrumentals and he writes all of the lyrics/vocal melodies. It's been working great. We would eventually like to start playing live soon once we can find reliable members, but that's another story.
My main reason for this post is just a few questions:
- Can you relate to how I'm feeling?
- Do you have any advice for us when writing?
- How many songs should we aim to write to dwindle down to say 10 songs?
- I'm also someone that has ADHD so it can be hard for me to actually sit my ass down and write. So if you can relate and got any advice on that, that would be great. 😂
- I know setting deadlines isn't necessarily good for creativity but what is a reasonable amount of time for us to have an album finished? I'm not trying to put pressure on us but I do like setting goals to aim for. Even if we don't necessarily reach them. (Obviously if we set a goal and we aren't happy with what we got we wouldn't release the music)

That’s an exaggeration but I have an older male friend at work. He acts like he’s close to me (he texts me a lot in the evenings, he’s called me from the bar or when he’s waiting to pick up his kid, and we’ve spent time alone together outside of work twice, one time to see a movie). When we’re alone he’s relaxed and really sweet. We’re not in a relationship, just friends. But at work I don’t feel as close to him. We talk and joke around but it’s not like when we’re alone outside of work.
And sometimes he teases me and it hurts my feelings a little bit. Why does he want to spend time with me outside of work and then act like it never happened? Maybe I’m guilty of doing the same. But for example at work he organizes a social event (cake day) that you have to pay for. I paid my share and in front of our lunch group he knows exactly who paid and is begging on guy to join who he already knows doesn’t want to join. Then he acts like he can’t remember if I paid and he said something like “I was hoping you wouldn’t join so there would be more cake for us”. I know it’s a joke but he only does that to me and he does it in a way like he’s looking for a reaction/he doesn’t say he’s teasing. I don’t like feeling really good around him when we’re alone and feeling like shit with a group
