This book basically challenges the relevance of "Food Deserts" to people's nutrition and material well-being. It doesn't dispute that they exist or that those facing poverty in them are hurting, but tries to find out why so many initiatives to address them fail and examines how people actually navigate life in them.
I thought it was pretty huge that he discovers a lot of people living in especially urban/suburban food deserts don't shop in their neighborhood even when a grocery opens there, they continue to shop closer to where they work or go out for other reasons. He goes into the long list of reasons for this, but also examines why people still want these stores in their neighborhoods even if they can't afford or choose not to shop in them.
He conducted lots of interviews for this study and became involved in the communities he focuses on here. I will add the caveat that this all applies more to urban/suburban food deserts, while my experience with them is growing up in a rural one, (but lucky enough to have been in a middle class family with a car.)
I really recommend this, especially if you enjoy reading in sociological and anthropological realm or are actively trying to address issues with food access in your community. I was fortunately able to check this out on an inter-library loan!

Man, i need some thoughts on this, i feel so hpoeless and angry.
For context, my parents are very far right. They've denied and invalidated my identity as bisexual for 4 years now. I, of course, have been dating men behind their backs because fuck them. I hate them. But the problem is that i live in a third world country (i think) so I don't have anywhere else to stay other than with them.
My father is a sarcastic prick. He's one of those "wOkE CuLtUrE" guys and loves making fun of people due to their difficulties. He's always making fun of me for shit and sometimes, when he realizes he fucked up, will continue laughing but act like he's laughing with me, instead of me. He's especially annoying because he never, ever accepts that he's wrong other than when he's with his stupid wife (my mother) and he only accepts he's right when she talks louder.
My mother is very childish. In an argument, she speaks over you, begins yelling as you begin to make sense, and when it's over, she goes back to work (they work at home) and starts talking shit about you to my father as she's working. They never* hit me, but they are extremely strict about gender identity and how i present myself. If I'm not wearing a t-shirt, jeans and regular men's shoes, then I'm not allowed to go out.
For context, i identify as male. I've always wanted to dress femininely and experiment with dresses, make-up and other stuff. But, of course, they've never allowed that.
All i ever wanted was to move to Canada and cut contact with everyone, start anew. But i first need to wait until I'm 18, and second i need to wait until they have enough money so i can go. I do not want to work for them, nor do i want to work at all.
And now, when i tried to show them what Elon did in the inauguration, they said that i was "subscribing to the left's lies" and that i had been following too many leftist accounts. My sister has moved out and she is heavily leftist, and my parents talk mad shit about her behind her back, which breaks my heart because i love her, she's always been very kind and accepting to me.
I can safely say that I've never wanted to ____ myself more than right now. I know things will get better, but when? And will they really? How can i know it? How can i know it won't get worse? I keep thinking about putting a gun in my mouth and squeezing the trigger, and no matter what i do these thoughts will not go away due to my ADHD and OCD. I can't even get access to a gun.
And no, therapy will not help right now. In my country, it's gonna take AT LEAST 5 or 6 months for me to actually get an appointment to a therapist, and not only that, it's very expensive. I just don't know what to do right now, man.

There is this Italian company called Legami that produces a lot of different stuff but is especially hyped/known (at least in Germany) right now for their erasable pens.
I first started collecting the pens the first time I discovered them in a bookstore chain here in Germany, which must have been either in 2022 or 2023. Since then I have collected every new pen and to my knowledge have all of them - except 2 (an UK exclusive one as well as the first version of the unicorn pen).
They now also sell non-erasable gel pens which I've also started collecting. Besides that I own different random pieces of stationery by them as well as the stuff that was in their advent calendar for 2024.

Hello. long time reader, first time poster.
Fair warning 💩 details below:
Been on Zep for about 6 months now. Having very good success at weight loss so far, just over halfway toward my goal.
Experienced some of the most common side effects (constipation, occasional nausea), but all very manageable. Suddenly, 72 hrs after my last dose, I had a night of terrible diarrhea. At first chalked up to something I ate. I was regular the next 36 hours and then again had another night of uncontrollable diarrhea. I have been on 10mg for 2 months now. No particular changes to my diet. I have been ramping up the exercise in the last few weeks, but that’s the only recent lifestyle change.
My question is: Anybody else experience a sudden onset of a new side effect after being on Zep for a long time?
