About a year and a half ago I was going on a lot of dates and started seeing a guy (let’s call him Thomas) from another country. Neither of us were looking for a relationship at the time but we both thought it was nice to engage in romantic gestures even if it was going to remain fairly casual. The same week I met another guy (let’s call him Ali) and for probably two months there, I felt a similar level of investment in each of them. Thomas spoke very limited English at the time and I know zero words of his native language but our relationship was a lot more meaningful than my relationship with Ali. Despite the language barrier, we had interesting conversations and cute dates. We goofed around a lot and just had a lot more in common than Ali and I. I helped (and still do) him improve his English. He was new to the states and to this day I’m his only American friend.
Unfortunately though, the way he kissed + a mismatch of anatomy made sex pretty unpleasant for me. Around the end of month two I told Thomas that I didn’t want to have sex with him anymore but that I’d still be down to keep the rest the same and he was good with that. Fast forward to the three month mark and things with Ali had taken a turn in a way that made me realize it was time to end things with Thomas. Even though Ali and I didn’t really vibe as people, the sex was amazing and suddenly I found myself very attached to him despite not at all wanting him to be my boyfriend. I told Thomas that my emotional state was a wake up call and he understood and was open to staying friends. Amazingly, we both really stood by that and have kept the friendship up for a year and some change since.
Since then Thomas has seen me through the fallout of a couple brief romantic relationships and I’ve seen him through one. We’ve grown to a place where we can kinda talk about anything. I don’t remember how it came up but I eventually got to give him feedback on his kissing and he said that he realized that I wasn’t enjoying it the very last time we made out 😂 he was using too much saliva and apparently it was on purpose bc women in his country like that 😭 He also shared with me that he was hooking up with a girl back home and that he made it very clear he didn’t want a relationship (like at all not just with her) and she said the same but then increasingly pushed him to change his mind and i don’t remember the details but he ended up here lol.
For his birthday I took him on his first 🍄🟫 trip and it was such a beautiful experience for both of us. At the time I felt very maternal toward him and we ended up talking about it because he felt similarly; I had guided him through some very hard times in this new place.
Fast forward to around August. At this point my dating intentions had changed and so I’m seeing a guy with the goal of having a relationship. There were no problems between this guy and I but we weren’t a good match and it was kind of palpable in the way I spoke about him. Because this was the first time I was pursuing an actual relationship I started to notice how touchy Thomas still was with me. Nothing crazy, but still pretty “single” behavior. And then as I was speaking about the guy, Thomas kinda started making fun of him. I specifically remember a comment Thomas made about him being old and therefore unable to get it up. I rolled my eyes and told him to shut up but I made a mental note to set a boundary on that kind of thing in the future. This guy might not have been a good fit, but at the time I was preparing for us to make it official.
Fast forward to early December and you guessed it, ONE! MORE! ADDITIONAL! FAILED! RELATIONSHIP!! 🥳🤪 (If you knew me you’d know how unique the last two years have been in terms of my dating life. This was all very new to me and I’m currently stepping away from the dating game for at least a year) There’s an explanation for the fast turnaround time between Mr. August and Mr. Autumn but it’s a long story. Let’s just say I REALLY didn’t anticipate this timeline of bouncing from one person to the next and I also got fully BAMBOOZLED by this last dude. ANYWAY, that relationship comes crashing down in a deeply traumatizing way and I end up taking space from newer friends for a while. I told Thomas I wouldn’t be around for a bit. I only spent time with people I’d known for at least 10 years.
2 weeks ago I started reaching back out to Thomas. It quickly became clear he was upset with me and eventually he sent a long message about our last interaction and that he felt hurt while I was away. We talked it out really well. Most of it was a misunderstanding because of the hasty way I locked down my life during December. He started the conversation making it sound like we were no longer friends but I could tell almost immediately that that’s not what he actually wanted and pretty soon we were back to normal. He did however admit that he had lied to me once. He said it was a big lie and that I would have lied in the situation too, but wouldn’t tell me. On Sunday he came over to my house to hang for the first time since probably November. The first hug when he came in was so good. We hung out in my living room and I got kind of emotional during it because all at once it hit me how much I missed him. I tried to explain what was going on but his English regressed in my absence so he didn’t really understand.
He stayed for probably five hours. We played board games and watched tv. I asked him about the lie and he still wouldn’t tell me but he said that it doesn’t affect my life at all, so I let it go. He ordered dinner for us and when we were done eating he got up to leave. I texted him the next day to explain what I meant about feeling emotional. He said Sunday felt really good for him too. Then yesterday he told me that he wanted to stay longer but thought he was overstaying his welcome. I had wanted him to stay longer too but I didn’t say anything because he very confidently announced he was heading out.
Last bit of context and then we’ll get to my question for the group:
Thomas, - buys us food and never lets me pay him back
- drives rideshares for a living so if I need a ride he’s happy to come get me (dw I don’t ask often)
- once drove 2 hours round trip to my destination (that I was originally going to take the train to) just so we could have more time together
I want to get physical with Thomas again. I don’t want sex and I don’t want to date him, but when we are together a solid 30% of my brain is wishing we were cuddling or holding hands. He used to give me the most amazing hand massages and they were a crazy turn on. This was true before I was single again too, but it just felt like a thing that happened when I was ovulating or whatever. Now, of course, my mind is a lot more free to play with the idea.
What should I do?
I think it would definitely be a shitty move to initiate physical stuff like that without talking about it.
Initially I thought it was probably a shitty move to mention wanting that kind of intimacy at all because of our history. Seems shitty to breakup with someone, ask them to stay friends (i.e. get over their feelings), and then come back just for physical intimacy after a series of romantic detours. But then I remembered that we never were moving in a serious direction anyway and we never actually talked about what his feelings were. I feel sure he’s at least attracted to me still. Perhaps the caveat is that now we also love each other platonically. however, maybe that means that the worst that could happen is he says no. Do you think it’s a no go regardless?
Give me your thoughts and advice please.
