It's "slang", first recorded by OED 1873 Routledge's Yng.Gentl. Mag. Feb. 137/1 It'll give you what for if it touches your lips., with the definition to give (one) what for = to inflict severe pain or chastisement. I live in Sweden and work as a translator. A translation agency just asked me for an offer. Their reply (in Swedish) to my offer was, "Thank you, we'll let you know if and when the end-customer accepts your offer." I can't understand: what's the difference between complicated and complex? They seem to be used interchangeably. Are they actually different at all? In the US, there are two different types of garment that can be called a jumper.For adult women (and older girls), it is the over-dress described by the other commenters; however, it can also be a garment for babies and toddlers, in which case it's more of an all-purpose term for anything that includes both a top and bottom, all in one piece, like pinafores, rompers, jon-jons, etc. (but ... I've searched for whether "either" can be used in a context on which the possible options are made of more than two, and found the answer here over English Language Usage. I'm betting that most people know exactly what I am talking about. It happens when you're scrolling through some social media and you see something that is only a little funny. Both these choices are correct. PIP references the Dickens character Philip Pirrup from “Great Expections” who underestimates others, overestimates himself, gets up to a lot of trouble but is still well liked by most. When I fill any form for my son this question “relationship with child” confuses me. Should the answer be “son” or “father”? To me, the ideal answer is always “a father–son relationship”. A little I believe that "assume", "presume", "suppose" are similar in meaning of to take some facts as a truth without proof. But it seems to me that "presume" is more formal, "assume" is less formal and " @Janus Bahs Jacquet. It would be an interesting argument. I agree that it is generally used as a word as if it were spelled "nonsequitur", but it is spelled "non sequitur", and in the Latin it is a two-word phrase translated (loosely) "not following".

So, to be clear, I do not judge the people in the comments nor do I have any moral crusade to wage. The only difference between some of the people who come on here and science’s worse grifters is their degree of finances, charisma, and gall. They are, on a fundamental level, pseudoscientists for the most part.
That being said, I know from experience that the posters here, however delusional, contain a variable level of good intentions, and they all have some minimum amount of scientific curiosity, however poorly tempered. I think it is in the best interest of science to try and treat such people in a way that brings out the best in them. Better they internalize positive lessons than convince themselves modern science is dogma. If you agree, the. This post is for you.
As a disclaimer, though, I do not object to the people mocking and shunning these people. Even toying with pseudoscience via naïveté is dangerous and treating them with hostility and condescension is leagues healthier than taking them seriously like they want us to. But if you want to try and actually change minds: I am a social work student. This is actually something I have marginal expertise in. Kind of. Maybe. Whatever.
Also brief aside I promise I’m not a douchebag for knowing how to spell naïveté. It was autocorrect I swear.
Anyways, here is what I would recommend if you want to help these guys learn positive takeaways. None of it is guaranteed to work, so take it with a grain of salt, and feel free to ignore this.
Strategy 1: Validate their emotions.
Their emotions are often valid. Now, this is not to say that their emotions are rooted in reality, but they are valid. If someone shoots down your terrible idea, no matter how right they were to do so, feeling embarrassed, frustrated, and persecuted are normal, understandable, and deeply human reactions. Treat them as such, and the person will grow more comfortable. An “I understand why you feel that way, but please consider “ at the start of a sentence can do more than you think.
Strategy 2: Engage with their excitement
People come here without math. They should come here with math. But sometimes, they come up with an idea that you can kind of picture the math of, or that you don’t need math to disprove. If so: give feedback like they want before going in to tell them about how they need to bring math next time!
This feels counterintuitive. It’s natural to feel, subconsciously if nothing else, that denying someone what they want if they misbehave will teach them intended lesson. It doesn’t. If you want someone to listen to you, it helps to endear them to you and get them less defensive first. Engaging with them like they want us to to whatever degree is possible will make them actually listen to the lecture on why they needed to do things differently.
This also applies to ChatGPT posts. Just saying something is ChatGPT doesn’t register because, to them, they did have a big hand in the creation process. They feel it’s their ideas that are going in, and just see AI as helping with the tiny details, not knowing how it perverts the ideas themselves. The ideas are what they want to have critiques. If you just say ChatGPT is bad or say they need math, even if you are right, they think that you aren’t understanding them and are being dense. And they are wrong about that! But to understand why they are wrong requires lore familiarity with the material than they have.
Strategy 3: engage them with real science.
This one is simple. They want to talk about science, not etiquette. Even if what they are bringing to the table is unsalvageable, bringing up stuff kind of similar to it can engage them. A lot of them are just excited about physics and jumping the gun, so this can make them feel more included in a conversation.
Not saying none of you guys are doing any of these. I just figured it might be helpful to people who feel helpless trying to explain some things to the people who come here.
And obviously, some people come with bad intentions. No shame in giving up on someone: it’a not your job to fix them. But hey, if you wanna use what I shared, I hope it helps.
