He stared at the small piece of metal on the table. It was hardly noteworthy in of itself, but the same could be said for many other things. No, instead it carried unsaid meaning. He had contemplated that meaning several times in his life, and now he was back there again, staring at it. But there was no point in lingering, he stood up, grabbing it and walking to the mirror.
He looked placidly at the same face he had known his whole life. It was tired, as ever. Tired of the life it lived and the lies it carried. But enough was enough, today something could change. The piece of metal- it was a pin, which he pushed through the lapel of his military uniform. A slight bit too far, pressing on his skin with a small sting. It echoed the doubt weighing on his mind.
He debated what he was doing right now, if it was worth the pain and effort. A sharp inhale as he adjusted it, clipping into place. He shut his eyes.
She gazed at the face in the mirror, and it gazed back nigh with a mind of its own. It wasn’t tired any more. It wouldn’t lie any more. Not today or any day again. As she shifted, the artifical ship lights danced off the reflective metal, an image of flag, five bands in white, pink, and blue. She almost broke into tears. No, that wasn’t quite right, she HAD broken into tears.
Each droplet welling up and rolling down her cheeks brought with it the untold cycles of pain, fear, doubt, sorrow. But they were also a sign of happiness. She was in her own body now. The sight of it had her dazed, eyes darting between her face and the pin. It wasn’t until one of the tears fell onto her hand that she finally came back to her senses.
She smiled, cutting through the tears with the joy of it all. It took her a moment to process it all, but once she had wiped them away, she gave a nod, and the face in the mirror nodded back, affirming her.
As she turned and walked to the door she could feel that for the final time, she was leaving behind her old life.
