A few years ago, I worked as a Senior Admin for my boss, “Jan.” I eventually left that job for several reasons: a shorter commute, better pay, and because Jan ignored my request for a raise. When I gave my resignation, she claimed she had been “on the cusp” of giving me a raise, but by then, it was too late.
After I left, she would occasionally text me, asking if I’d come back and offering various deals, but they never matched what I was earning at my new job, so I always declined.
Fast forward to now—I was laid off from that job earlier this year, and Jan hired me back immediately. I came back as an EA, but I took a $15K pay cut and less PTO. While I was grateful for the job, I kept applying elsewhere to keep my options open—I have three kids and a family to support, after all.
When she rehired me, Jan was a Senior VP. A few months ago, she was promoted to Chief Officer, and I overheard her mentioning that she received a raise with the title change. Based on what I know, she’s probably earning $250K+ now. Meanwhile, I’m commuting 45 minutes each way, earning $68K/year, and only getting 10 days of PTO annually.
I’ve been doing this work for 15+ years, and I don’t feel like I’m being compensated fairly—especially now that I’m supporting a Chief Officer. She didn’t even tell me about her promotion or raise. I overheard it and later saw the update in Workday. She didn’t think to say, “Hey, now that you’re supporting a Chief Officer, here’s a raise for you.” Nothing.
Recently, I received an offer from another company: $77K/year, 20 days of PTO, and a 25-minute commute.
Now I’m torn. I feel some loyalty to Jan because she gave me a job when I really needed one. But at the same time, I’ve seen employees who’d been with the company much longer than me get let go without much consideration. It made me wonder—does loyalty even matter?
I know leaving would upset her, but is staying out of loyalty the right move for me?

Hi, my school district has this academy where they basically show you what its like being a firefighter for grade 11s and 12s. I just have a few questions on how to possible increase my chances in getting in and what are they generally looking for. Theirs are 3 stages a application, fitness test and interview.
I am mostly concerned about the running part of the fitness test "2.4km in ideally 12mins or less". I feel like I am a pretty active person I've been doing boxing for around 10 months and have had 3 fights and started to weightlift again to prepare. But despite this my cardio is still pretty bad lol. The fitness test is on Jan 9th so im hoping i'll be ready by then and im wondering what is the best way to get my cardio up. Should I just try to do the 2.4km test the best i can every other day or should i just run slow and do as many laps as i can?
Lastly I am most worried about my grades and attendance as I have to provide that in the application. My grades for my academic courses are really not the best, ive been kinda out of it in school and even boxing and everything in general. And my attendance is not the worst but ive still missed a considerble amount of days as i got really sick twice this semester. Im scared their gonna bring this up in the interview and im not gonna know what to say and ruin my chances of getting in.
Although if i dont get in thats okay cause i can try again next year. Anyways sorry for the long post but thank you to anyone who replys!

Currently in my friendgroup there’s no one I can talk to about this so I’m hoping to find some good advice and conversation here.
So after practically living next to each other for half a year, me and my girlfriend have been long distance for about one and a half years now. For me things seemed optimistic as I’m planning to close the gap in 2025 by moving to Finland but after talking to her she doesn’t seem to be so optimistic about it.
Right now is one of our visits which we do about ever month and we’ve had a long talk about our relationship. She said that while she’s happy and we’re the perfectest couple when we’re together, she’s handling the distance part not so well. She said it’s hard for her to keep the romantic connection alive when we’re apart and it it creates such an emotional distance between her and me. To the point where when we see each other she said it’s basically like she has to reintroduce herself for a few days, like meeting a stranger before she reverts back to usual relationship after a few days. She says the flips are really intense because one time we don’t see each other and she looses connection , the other time we’re sitting on each other 24/7 which is too much also.
The tough part is that she said the longer the ldr goes on the more pessimistic she gets about making it. Which is really awful to hear given I’m just now starting to concretely plan my move and I have a 2 month internship in Helsinki coming up even before that. The way I see it so optimistic and she sees it so pessimistic really hurts me right now and the whole conversation felt like a few words away from breaking up entirely.
So I tried to figure out what we can do but she said we already do everything we can like calling, texting, meeting once a month and she made sure to let me know I’m doing everything right and she sees my effort but that just the circumstance are awfully bad to her. She said she wants to try going on because she loves me and doesn’t wanna loose what we have but yeah, the circumstances. I told her it’s okay, I want to figure this out with her as a team but I’m also not gonna trap her in an ldr if that’s what she wants.
So now I feel like I’m just in a waiting game. Like I’m already pre mourning the break up, or waiting on if it’ll hold until the gap closing. I’m really invested in this relationship, she’s my dream partner and we’re so close to closing the gap. We put so much effort into this cause we love each other and now I’m just really insecure going into the next period apart just waiting and hoping if or when she might feel she has to break up. I used to be so secure with her but this obviously changes that. I cried the rest of the day and now I’m writing this in hopes of hearing from couples who had the same or similar experiences and if there’s someone I can even do anymore.

First off a huge “Thank You” to the Reddit community for reporting on their messed up orders. I thought that there’s no way a company could be that inept. However, because of you all, I was saved from being taken advantage of by Best Buy. And, maybe, this post will help someone else, trying to save some money going into this holiday season, from getting scrooged by Best Buy.
Today I saw a Refurbished Apple Watch Series 9 with a working blood oxygen sensor in “excellent condition” on the Best Buy website for $293.99. So, I bought it. Woohoo, thunderous applause, congratulations emails from Best Buy. I remembered reading about people having problems with their open box orders and would think that it couldn’t be possible because the returns are geek squad verified, it says so on their website. Thankfully, I could pick it up in an hour at the store 10 miles away.
Get to the Best Buy an hour after ordering. Then waited another hour and a half. Finally I get an email that my order is ready for pickup. The guy behind the counter could have just looked up and said “dude, it’s here”, but I digress. I get up to the register and hand over ID and complete the pickup.
But a little voice was nagging me. So I had the cashier wait a second while I opened up the not Apple Box. I pulled out a new charging cord, cool. Then I pulled out a 41mm silver watch and a white band. Not what I ordered.
Manager came over, took the watch and went to the register. She said that this was the correct watch, that the numbers matched and everything. I showed her the picture that I took when I placed the order and told her that it is definitely not correct. I asked her for the watch that was pictured and what I’d paid for. (A 41mm watch with the same functions is a bit cheaper).
I was given 2 options -
- Keep the watch that I had overpaid for and have the wrong size, color and band.
- Return it.
Best Buy doesn’t care about your time, your fuel, or even delivering the correct product. I thank you all for your stories. I can only imagine what I would have gone through if they had shipped it to me. Or if I had waited till I was away from the register to open the box up. The amount of excuses the manager gave me as to the reason that this happened was inexcusable. “Returns aren’t always checked and sometimes this happens”, I was told. “We don’t know if we’ll get any more in”, “Things get mislabeled”. The manager gave me 10 to 15 excuses, but not once did she try and make things right!
I don’t know if I have any recourse to Best Buy’s actions. However, I can warn others by voicing what Best Buy has done to me. They have cost me both time and money for, what I feel is, a total “Bait and Switch” tactic. They advertised a certain model of watch and then delivered an inferior and incorrect product. The options provided to me were not what I wanted. I wanted the watch that I ordered. They have several available on their website. But I was only offered to keep the incorrect watch at the more expensive “Bait and Switch” price or return the watch. I had to at least cut my losses and get my $315.30 back. I was afraid that if I took the watch and tried to talk to someone higher up that I would run into more excuses and they could then add that I switched the watches.
This is in no way a slanderous post aimed at Best Buy. Slander would impugn lying and/or having no proof. This is a true story and I now bear new emotional scars from my wife berating me all evening about how I dragged her around and waited for hours in Best Buy for nothing. Now she begging me to hurry up and post this so we can get some sleep.
So, again Reddit Community, a Huge Thank You for your stories, it helped this old man from getting taken advantage of by Best Buy.

Make things right, don’t make excuses
TL;DR - If you buy an Open-Box, Excellent Condition, Geek Squad Verified product - don’t have it delivered, pick your package up! And open it at the register when you pick it up/buy it or you could get screwed!

I’m diving into the theme of predetermined fate vs. free will and was wondering if anyone knows of RPG systems that tackle this concept in their mechanics.
Lately, I’ve been fascinated by ideas related to fate, especially in the Greek mythological sense, and I’m searching for mechanics that reflect this. Ideally, I’d love to see systems that reward or punish both adhering to and defying fate—kind of a tall order, I know!
Here’s what I’ve explored so far:
City of Mist: Its MYTHOS VS. LOGOS feels thematically close, but it doesn’t have a distinct "fate" mechanic.
Burning Wheel: The Artha system offers a bit of the vibe I’m looking for, though it’s still not tied directly to fate.
Star Wars Saga Edition: Its Destiny feels too explicit and leans toward rewarding following fate while punishing deviation. It lacks the ambiguity I’d like for this theme.
Masks: A New Generation: The Doomed is cool, but it doesn’t delve into fate as a mechanical concept.
So, I’m curious—are there any other systems with mechanics that explore fate vs. free will, or something adjacent to it? Would love to hear your suggestions or even homebrew ideas!
