Hi everybody, the time has finally come. With the end of support for Win 10 being on the horizon and having to use Win 11 at work, I'm finally ready to take the plunge and switch my private machine over to Linux. Since I still have a few months left, I wanted to get started early with a dual boot configuration to test the waters and make my first mistakes.
I use my machine mainly for gaming (90+% of the time with Steam games), text editing (M$ Word atm), some calculations and finances (M$ Excel atm), and of course mail (M$ Outlook atm) and browsing (Firefox). The specs of the machine are:
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX G.Skill 32 GB RAM DDR5-6000 MSI B650 GAMING PLUS TOMAHAWK Samsung 990 2TB NVME SSD Some chinese 1TB SSD Creative Soundblaster AE7 Soundcard <------- Really worried about this one
So my questions are:
- Which Distro would you recommend for someone with my usecase? I heard that Valve has its own Distro, but it is not officially supported for normal desktop use and instead meant to be used exclusively on the Steam Deck. Would it run on my hardware? Which Distros would be good alternatives? I'm not afraid of tech and learning a few things, but on the other hand I use this PC mostly in my free time for entertainment and would prefer not to spend half of my time tinkering with stuff in the console.
- Is there any chance I can get my Sound device working? What I've read so far online is very discouraging, it seems like there are big compatibility issues with Creative products under Linux. However, I need the card to drive my headphones, the normal onboard soundcard cannot overcome their impedance of 300 Ω. I try to avoid an AMP since I already have the card with a built-in one.
- As far as I understand, the magic behind playing Steam games on Linux nowadays is Proton. Is Proton available for every Distro like any other program would be or is it restricted to some specific ones? Sorry if this is a dumb questions, I haven't touched Linux in decades.
- I play a lot of M$ Flight Sim 2024 atm, is there any chance to get it running on Linux? Being a M$ product I don't have high hopes, but is there a way? Also, I assume that my HOTAS from Thrustmaster should be usable since it is quite old (15 years...?) and is well established, what are your experiences with these kinds of peripherals?
- Is there a good tutorial series, either written or in video form, where I can learn the basics of using Linux? I know that I have to relearn some stuff and I'm okay with that, just looking for resources.

As an ardent movie watcher, I’ve always noticed that actors who can maintain a neutral accent or really good at switching accents always have a better chance of sustenance in the industry.
When I compared two actors like Vimal and VJS who started doing lead roles at the same time frame, apart from the acting skills, I found that though Vimal could really deliver wonderful performance in certain village based roles, he terribly suffered trying to be a urban youth. On the other hand, VJS played brilliantly in both Thenmerku Paruva Kaatru and Pizza with two distinct accents and looks.
I feel that actors who could get a hold of their accents are really the masters of disguise. The OG Kamal Hassan is the PRO in switching accents and in recent times, I can see Dhanush doing that effortlessly.
Let me know if you think of any other actors who are really good at accents or dictation.
