At a chiropractic office, the check-in procedure is that I approach an iPad, type in my 4-digit birth date (mmdd), and select my name. When I type in my birth date, the names of all other patients with the same birth date along with their assigned doctor from that practice appear (there are about 10 that show up). I mentioned it to them that this could be a HIPAA violation and they said “We looked into it already and it’s not”.
What steps can I take to ensure my information is protected while also preserving the relationship so I can continue to see this provider?

I know I’m partially at fault for the friendship ending, and I’ll take my share of the blame. Last November, I (35F) visited my friend Kevin and his wife Karen, who had moved several states away. Karen is an extreme vegan—she ridicules non-vegan food and controls what’s allowed in her home. Kevin eats fish but keeps it separate, so she tolerates it. Before my visit, Karen sent me food rules: no non-vegan food in her kitchen. She allowed me to bring milk but later revealed she dumped it and replaced it with almond milk, even using it in our meals without telling me. The food tasted off, but I didn’t complain. I kept protein snacks hidden in my room, which she found by snooping through my suitcase. When she called about another visit, she banned all non-vegan items, laughed about replacing my milk, and justified invading my privacy. Angry, I called her controlling and ended my friendship with Kevin, who defended her behavior. My husband thinks I’m better off without them. I’m unsure if I’ll respond to Kevin’s recent “can we talk” text—I’m just done.
